  • ตื่น dtùuen

    to wake up, to get up verb

    Unaspirated dt, low tone, long uue. ตื่นนอนdtùuen nawn (wake + sleep) means the same.

    • ตื่น dtùuenกี่ gìiโมง moong

      What time do you get up?

    • ตื่น dtùuenแล้ว láew

      I'm up.

  • นอน nawn

    to sleep; to go to bed; to lie down verb

    ไปนอนbpai nawn is 'go to bed'. It also means 'to stay the night': นอนที่โรงแรมnawn tîi roong-raem sleep at a hotel.

    • นอน nawnกี่ gìiโมง moong

      What time do you go to bed?

    • ไป bpaiนอน nawnแล้ว láew

      I'm off to bed.

  • อาบน้ำ àap-náam

    to shower, to take a bath verb

    In the heat most Thais shower twice a day, morning and evening.

    • ไป bpaiอาบน้ำ àap-náamนะ ná

      I'm going to take a shower.

    • อาบน้ำ àap-náamตอนเช้า dtawn-cháao

      I shower in the morning.

  • แปรงฟัน bpraeng-fan

    to brush your teeth verb

    • ไป bpaiแปรงฟัน bpraeng-fan

      Go and brush your teeth.

    • อาบน้ำ àap-náamแปรงฟัน bpraeng-fanแล้ว láew

      I've showered and brushed my teeth.

  • ทำงาน tam-ngaan

    to work verb

    • ทำงาน tam-ngaanที่ไหน tîi-nǎi

      Where do you work?

    • ทำงาน tam-ngaanที่ tîiร้าน ráanกาแฟ gaa-fae

      I work at a café.

  • ประชุม bprà-chum

    meeting; to have a meeting noun

    It starts with a quick, low bprà: an unaspirated bp, with no puff of air.

    • มี miiประชุม bprà-chumตอนบ่าย dtawn-bàai

      I have a meeting in the afternoon.

    • ประชุม bprà-chumกี่ gìiโมง moong

      What time is the meeting?

  • เริ่ม rôem

    to start, to begin verb

    Falling tone, with the vowel oe of เจอjoe.

    • เริ่ม rôemกี่ gìiโมง moong

      What time does it start?

    • เริ่ม rôemทำงาน tam-ngaanเก้า gâaoโมง moong

      I start work at nine.

  • เลิกงาน lôek-ngaan

    to finish work (for the day) verb

    เลิกlôek is 'to stop': เลิกเรียนlôek rian is when classes finish.

    • เลิกงาน lôek-ngaanกี่ gìiโมง moong

      What time do you finish work?

    • เลิกงาน lôek-ngaanแล้ว láew

      I've finished work for the day.

  • ออกกำลังกาย àwk-gam-lang-gaai

    to exercise, to work out verb

    Literally 'put out the body's strength'.

    • ชอบ châwpออกกำลังกาย àwk-gam-lang-gaaiไหม mǎi

      Do you like working out?

    • ไป bpaiออกกำลังกาย àwk-gam-lang-gaaiที่ tîiยิม yim

      I go to the gym to work out.

  • วิ่ง wîng

    to run verb

    Falling tone. Chiang Mai runners do laps of the old city moat at dawn, before the heat.

    • ชอบ châwpวิ่ง wîngตอนเช้า dtawn-cháao

      I like running in the morning.

    • ไป bpaiวิ่ง wîngกัน ganไหม mǎi

      Shall we go for a run?

  • กลับ glàp

    to go back, to return verb

    กลับบ้านglàp bâan (go home) is กลับglàp + home; กลับมาglàp maa is 'come back'.

    • กลับ glàpมา maaแล้ว láew

      I'm back!

    • จะ jàกลับ glàpกี่ gìiโมง moong

      What time are you going back?

  • ใหม่ mài

    new; again, anew adjective

    Low tone. After a verb it means 'again': มาใหม่maa mài come again. Three different words: low ใหม่mài new, falling ไม่mâi not, rising ไหมmǎi (question).

    • ห้อง hâwngใหม่ màiสวย sǔayมาก mâak

      The new room is really nice.

    • เริ่ม rôemใหม่ mài

      Let's start again.
