Unit 14 · Lesson 3 · Pattern

Telling the time and your routine

One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.

How it works

Thai splits the day into parts, each with its own word: ตีdtii in the small hours, โมงเช้าmoong cháao in the morning, บ่ายbàai and โมงเย็นmoong yen in the afternoon, ทุ่มtûm in the evening.

1 The everyday clock

Thais don't count from 1 to 12 twice. The day is split into parts, and each part has its own word. You already know เจ็ดโมงเช้าjèt moong cháao (7 a.m.) and ห้าโมงเย็นhâa moong yen (5 p.m.) from the train timetable. Here is the whole clock:

  • ตื่น dtùuenตี dtiiห้า hâa

    I get up at 5 a.m.

  • เจอ joeกัน ganบ่าย bàaiสอง sǎwngโมง moong

    See you at 2 p.m.

  • นอน nawnห้า hâaทุ่ม tûm

    I go to bed at 11 p.m.

2 Half past and minutes

ครึ่งkrûeng (half) after a time means 'half past': หกโมงครึ่งhòk moong krûeng 6:30, ตีห้าครึ่งdtii hâa krûeng 5:30 a.m., สองทุ่มครึ่งsǎwng tûm krûeng 8:30 p.m. Other minutes follow the hour with นาทีnaa-tii: เจ็ดโมงสิบห้านาทีjèt moong sìp-hâa naa-tii 7:15.

To ask the time, say กี่โมงแล้วgìi moong láew, literally 'how many o'clock already?'.

  • ตื่น dtùuenตี dtiiห้า hâaครึ่ง krûeng

    I get up at 5:30 a.m.

  • กี่ gìiโมง moongแล้ว láew

    What time is it?

3 Saying when

The time goes after the verb, with or without ตอนdtawn (at): ตื่นเจ็ดโมงdtùuen jèt moong and ตื่นตอนเจ็ดโมงdtùuen dtawn jèt moong both mean 'I get up at seven'. You can also put it first: บ่ายโมงมีเรียนbàai moong mii rian (at 1 p.m. I have class).

Ask with กี่โมงgìi moong (what time?) or ตอนไหนdtawn nǎi (when, at what time of day?). For 'from … to …', put ถึงtǔeng between the times: เก้าโมงถึงห้าโมงเย็นgâo moong tǔeng hâa moong yen, nine to five.

  • เริ่ม rôemทำงาน tam-ngaanเก้า gâaoโมง moong

    I start work at nine.

  • เจอ joeกัน ganตอน dtawnเที่ยง tîang

    See you at noon.

  • ทำงาน tam-ngaanเก้า gâaoโมง moongถึง tǔengห้า hâaโมง moongเย็น yen

I work from nine to five.

4 How often

Each frequency word has its usual place:

  • ทุกวันtúk wan every day, at the end: ไปยิมทุกวันbpai yim túk wan
  • บางวันbaang wan some days, at the start: บางวันนอนดึกbaang wan nawn dùek
  • ปกติbpòk-gà-dtì usually, at the start: ปกติตื่นเจ็ดโมงbpòk-gà-dtì dtùuen jèt moong
  • บ่อยbàwy often, after the verb: มาบ่อยไหมmaa bàwy mǎi
  • ไม่ค่อยmâi kâwy not much, before the verb: ไม่ค่อยออกกำลังกายmâi kâwy àwk-gam-lang-gaai
  • ไป bpaiยิม yimทุก túkวัน wan

I go to the gym every day.

  • บาง baangวัน wanนอน nawnดึก dùek

Some days I go to bed late.

  • ปกติ bpòk-gà-dtìไม่ mâiดื่ม dùuemกาแฟ gaa-fae

    I don't usually drink coffee.

Tips

  • •ประมาณbprà-maan (about) makes any time vague: ประมาณสองทุ่มbprà-maan sǎwng tûm is 'around 8 p.m.'.
  • •Morning or evening? แปดโมงเช้าbpàet moong cháao is 8 a.m., สองทุ่มsǎwng tûm is 8 p.m.: with the Thai clock you never need a.m. or p.m.
  • •ดึกแล้วdùek láew (it's late) is how Thais politely wrap up an evening: everyone hears 'time to go home'.
