Phrases to say out loud

Listen, then say each one. In the app the speech trainer scores your tones word by word.

  • ปวด bpùatหัว hǔa

    I have a headache.

    ปวดbpùat starts with an unaspirated bp: no puff of air, like the p in 'spot'.
  • ปวด bpùatท้อง táwng

    I have a stomach ache.

    ท้องtáwng (stomach) is high; say it with a falling tone and it's ห้องhâwng, a room.
  • ต้อง dtâwngไป bpaiหา hǎaหมอ mǎw

    I need to see a doctor.

    ต้องdtâwng has an unaspirated dt, like the t in 'stop', and a falling tone.
  • รู้สึก rúu-sùekไม่สบาย mâi sà-baai

    I'm not feeling well.

    In รู้สึกrúu-sùek the second vowel is ue: say 'oo' with your lips spread, as if you're smiling.
  • เจ็บ jèpคอ kaw

    I have a sore throat.

    Close your lips at the end of เจ็บjèp without releasing the p; คอkaw has a puff of air.
  • เป็น bpenไข้ kâi

    I have a fever.

    ไข้kâi (fever) has a puff of air and falls; low ไข่kài is an egg.
  • ช่วย chûayเรียก rîakรถพยาบาล rót-pá-yaa-baanให้ hâiหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

    Please call an ambulance!

    Men ช่วยเรียกรถพยาบาลให้หน่อยครับ chûay rîak rót-pá-yaa-baan hâi nàwy krápWomen ช่วยเรียกรถพยาบาลให้หน่อยค่ะ chûay rîak rót-pá-yaa-baan hâi nàwy kâ

    Say รถพยาบาลrót-pá-yaa-baan as one word: high, high, mid, mid.
  • ยา yaaนี้ níiกิน ginหลัง lǎngอาหาร aa-hǎanใช่ châiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    I take this medicine after meals, right?

    Men ยานี้กินหลังอาหารใช่ไหมครับ yaa níi gin lǎng aa-hǎan châi mǎi krápWomen ยานี้กินหลังอาหารใช่ไหมคะ yaa níi gin lǎng aa-hǎan châi mǎi ká

    หลังlǎng (after) rises, just like ไหมmǎi at the end.
  • ขอ kǎwใบเสร็จ bai-sètครับ kráp

    Could I have a receipt, please?

    Men ขอใบเสร็จครับ kǎw bai-sèt krápWomen ขอใบเสร็จค่ะ kǎw bai-sèt kâ

    เสร็จsèt is short and low, and ends with a t you don't release.

Role-play: At the pharmacy

You wake up with a sore throat, a headache and a slight fever. At the pharmacy on your soi, explain how you feel and find out what to take.

    I'm allergic to this medicine.

  • กิน ginครั้ง krángละ láกี่ gìiเม็ด métครับ kráp

    How many pills do I take each time?

    Men กินครั้งละกี่เม็ดครับ Women กินครั้งละกี่เม็ดคะ

  • วัน wanละ láกี่ gìiครั้ง krángครับ kráp

    How many times a day?

    Men วันละกี่ครั้งครับ Women วันละกี่ครั้งคะ

  • ควร kuanไป bpaiหา hǎaหมอ mǎwไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    Should I see a doctor?

    Men ควรไปหาหมอไหมครับ Women ควรไปหาหมอไหมคะ
