  • หมอ mǎw

    doctor noun

    Anyone who treats you is a หมอmǎw: หมอฟันmǎw fan is a dentist and หมอนวดmǎw nûat a massage therapist.

      Have you been to the doctor yet?

  • คลินิก klí-nìk

    clinic noun

    Many doctors open their own clinic in the evening, after a day's work at the hospital.

      Is the clinic far?

  • ยา yaa

    medicine, drug noun

    In Thai you 'eat' medicine, กินยาgin yaa, even when it's a liquid.

    • กิน ginยา yaaหรือยัง rǔue-yang

      Have you taken your medicine yet?

    • ยา yaaนี้ níiกิน ginยังไง yang-ngaiครับ kráp

      How do I take this medicine?

      Men ยานี้กินยังไงครับ Women ยานี้กินยังไงคะ

  • ครั้ง kráng

    time, occasion (once, twice…) noun

    วันละสามครั้งwan lá sǎam kráng is 'three times a day': ละlá means 'per', as in คืนละkuuen lá (per night).

    • วัน wanละ láสาม sǎamครั้ง kráng

      Three times a day.

    • อาเจียน aa-jianสอง sǎwngครั้ง kráng

      I threw up twice.

  • เม็ด mét

    pill, tablet; counting word for pills noun

    It's also the counting word for pills: ครั้งละสองเม็ดkráng lá sǎwng mét is two pills each time.

    • กิน ginกี่ gìiเม็ด métครับ kráp

      How many pills do I take?

      Men กินกี่เม็ดครับ Women กินกี่เม็ดคะ

    • ครั้ง krángละ láหนึ่ง nùengเม็ด mét

      One tablet each time.

  • หาย hǎai

    to get better, to recover; to be lost, to disappear verb

    When an illness หายhǎai, it disappears; the same word is used for a lost passport or a missing bag.

    • หาย hǎaiแล้ว láew

      I'm better now.

    • หาย hǎaiเร็วๆ rew-rewนะ ná

      Get well soon!

  • พักผ่อน pák-pàwn

    to rest, to relax verb

    • พักผ่อน pák-pàwnเยอะๆ yóe-yóeนะ ná

      Get plenty of rest, okay?

    • อยาก yàakพักผ่อน pák-pàwn

      I want to rest.

  • ต้อง dtâwng

    must, have to, need to verb

    It goes before the verb; you already know it from ต้องไปแล้วdtâwng bpai láew (I have to go) and ไม่ต้องmâi dtâwng (no need).

    • ต้อง dtâwngไป bpaiหา hǎaหมอ mǎw

      I need to see a doctor.

    • ต้อง dtâwngกิน ginยา yaa

      You have to take medicine.

  • ควร kuan

    should, ought to verb

    Softer than ต้องdtâwng: it's advice, not a rule, and 'shouldn't' is ไม่ควรmâi kuan.

    • ควร kuanพักผ่อน pák-pàwn

      You should rest.

    • ควร kuanดื่ม dùuemน้ำ náamเยอะๆ yóe-yóe

      You should drink plenty of water.

  • ประกัน bprà-gan

    insurance noun

    Health insurance is ประกันสุขภาพbprà-gan sùk-kà-pâap; clinics and hospitals will ask if you have any.

    • มี miiประกัน bprà-gan

      I have insurance.

    • ใช้ cháiประกัน bprà-ganได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Can I use my insurance?

      Men ใช้ประกันได้ไหมครับ Women ใช้ประกันได้ไหมคะ

  • ใบเสร็จ bai-sèt

    receipt noun

    Your insurer will want one from every clinic and pharmacy, so always ask.

    • ขอ kǎwใบเสร็จ bai-sètครับ kráp

      Could I have a receipt, please?

      Men ขอใบเสร็จครับ Women ขอใบเสร็จค่ะ

    • ขอ kǎwใบเสร็จ bai-sètด้วย dûayครับ kráp

      A receipt too, please.

      Men ขอใบเสร็จด้วยครับ Women ขอใบเสร็จด้วยค่ะ

  • เรียก rîak

    to call (a taxi, an ambulance, someone over) verb

    You know it from เรียกว่าrîak wâa (to be called); a phone call is โทรtoo.

    • ช่วย chûayเรียก rîakแท็กซี่ táek-sîiให้ hâiหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

      Could you call me a taxi?

      Men ช่วยเรียกแท็กซี่ให้หน่อยครับ Women ช่วยเรียกแท็กซี่ให้หน่อยค่ะ

    • เรียก rîakแกร็บ gráepดีกว่า dii gwàa

      Let's call a Grab instead.

  • รถพยาบาล rót-pá-yaa-baan

    ambulance noun

    The emergency number for an ambulance is 1669; โรงพยาบาลroong-pá-yaa-baan (hospital) is the 'nursing building'.

    • ช่วย chûayเรียก rîakรถพยาบาล rót-pá-yaa-baanให้ hâiหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

      Please call an ambulance!

      Men ช่วยเรียกรถพยาบาลให้หน่อยครับ Women ช่วยเรียกรถพยาบาลให้หน่อยค่ะ
