Unit 9 · Lesson 3 · Pattern

Counting things: classifiers

One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.

How it works

Count with noun + number + counting word: มะม่วงสามลูกmá-mûang sǎam lûuk three mangoes. Ask with กี่gìi + counting word.

1 Noun + number + counting word

English says three mangoes. Thai says mango three [counting word]: มะม่วงสามลูกmá-mûang sǎam lûuk. The counting word (a classifier) depends on the kind of thing, and you can't leave it out.

You already know a few: containers count what's in them, like แก้วgâew for drinks and จานjaan for plates of food, and คนkon counts people.

  • มะม่วง má-mûangสาม sǎamลูก lûuk

    Three mangoes.

  • กาแฟ gaa-faeสอง sǎwngแก้ว gâew

    Two coffees.

  • ข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gàiสอง sǎwngจาน jaan

    Two plates of chicken rice.

  • มา maaสอง sǎwngคน kon

    There are two of us.

แก้วgâewglasses, cupsชาสองแก้วchaa sǎwng gâew two teas
จานjaanplates of foodข้าวสามจานkâao sǎam jaan three plates of rice
คนkonpeopleคนสี่คนkon sìi kon four people

2 This one, a big one

Once it's clear what you're talking about, drop the noun and keep the counting word: ลูกนี้lûuk níi this one (a fruit), อันนั้นan nán that one, ใบใหญ่bai yài a big one (a hat or a bag). อันนี้an níi from unit 4 is exactly this: อันan + นี้níi.

With the noun, the order is noun + counting word + นี้níi / นั้นnán or an adjective: มะม่วงลูกนี้má-mûang lûuk níi this mango, หมวกใบใหญ่mùak bai yài a big hat.

  • เอา aoลูก lûukนี้ níiครับ kráp

    I'll take this one.

    Men เอาลูกนี้ครับ Women เอาลูกนี้ค่ะ

  • มี miiใบ baiใหญ่ yàiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

Do you have a bigger one?

    Men มีใบใหญ่ไหมครับ Women มีใบใหญ่ไหมคะ

  • ตัว dtuaนั้น nánสวย sǔayมาก mâak

That one's really nice. (a shirt)

3 Asking how many

To ask how many, put กี่gìi where the number goes, with the counting word after it: เอากี่ลูกao gìi lûuk How many (fruit) do you want? The answer swaps กี่gìi for a number: สามลูกsǎam lûuk Three.

กี่บาทgìi bàat (how many baht) is another way to ask the price, just like เท่าไหร่tâo-rài.

  • เอา aoกี่ gìiขวด kùat

How many bottles do you want?

  • มา maaกี่ gìiคน kon

How many of you are there?

  • อันนี้ an níiกี่ gìiบาท bàatครับ kráp

How many baht is this one?

    Men อันนี้กี่บาทครับ Women อันนี้กี่บาทคะ

4 Colours

Colour words usually come after สีsǐi (colour): สีแดงsǐi daeng red, สีเขียวsǐi kǐaw green. They follow the noun or the counting word: หมวกสีขาวmùak sǐi kǎao a white hat, ใบสีดำbai sǐi dam the black one.

Ask สีอะไรsǐi à-rai (what colour?) or สีไหนsǐi nǎi (which colour?), and choose with เอาสีนี้ao sǐi níi (I'll take this colour).

  • มี miiสี sǐiแดง daengไหม mǎiครับ kráp

Do you have it in red?

    Men มีสีแดงไหมครับ Women มีสีแดงไหมคะ

  • ชอบ châwpสี sǐiไหน nǎi

    Which colour do you like?

  • เอา aoใบ baiสี sǐiขาว kǎaoครับ kráp

    I'll take the white one.

    Men เอาใบสีขาวครับ Women เอาใบสีขาวค่ะ

Tips

  • •For one, Thais often put หนึ่งnùeng after the counting word: น้ำขวดหนึ่งnáam kùat nùeng a bottle of water.
  • •Not sure of the counting word? อันan works for most small things, and pointing with อันนี้an níi always works.
  • •Prices per piece use ละlá (each) after the counting word: ลูกละยี่สิบบาทlûuk lá yîi-sìp bàat 20 baht each.
  • •The counting word can change what you get: ไก่สองตัวgài sǎwng dtua is two whole chickens, ไก่สองชิ้นgài sǎwng chín two pieces of chicken.
