Unit 13 · Lesson 3 · Pattern

Can: ได้, เป็น and ไหว

One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.

How it works

Put ได้dâi, เป็นbpen or ไหวwǎi after the verb: able or allowed, know how, or can manage it.

1 Able or allowed

Thai puts 'can' after the verb and its object: พูดภาษาไทยได้pûut paa-sǎa tai dâi (can speak Thai) is literally 'speak Thai can'. ได้dâi covers being able to and being allowed to, so ถ่ายรูปได้ไหมtàai-rûup dâi mǎi asks 'Can I take a photo?'.

For 'can't', put ไม่mâi in front of ได้dâi: มาไม่ได้maa mâi dâi (I can't come). For a question add ไหมmǎi, and answer ได้dâi or ไม่ได้mâi dâi.

  • พูด pûutอังกฤษ ang-grìtได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    Can you speak English?

    Men พูดอังกฤษได้ไหมครับ Women พูดอังกฤษได้ไหมคะ

  • ถ่ายรูป tàai-rûupได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    Can I take a photo?

    Men ถ่ายรูปได้ไหมครับ Women ถ่ายรูปได้ไหมคะ

  • พรุ่งนี้ prûng-níiมา maaไม่ mâiได้ dâi

    I can't come tomorrow.

2 Know how to: a skill you learned

For a skill you had to learn, like swimming, driving or cooking, Thais put เป็นbpen after the verb: ว่ายน้ำเป็นwâai-náam bpen (I can swim, I know how). ไม่เป็นmâi bpen means you never learned: ขับรถไม่เป็นkàp rót mâi bpen (I can't drive).

ได้dâi isn't wrong here, but เป็นbpen makes it clear you mean the skill. For languages, Thais mostly use ได้dâi.

  • ว่ายน้ำ wâai-náamเป็น bpenไหม mǎi

    Can you swim?

  • ขี่ kìiมอเตอร์ไซค์ maw-dtôe-saiเป็น bpen

    I can ride a motorbike.

  • ทำอาหาร tam aa-hǎanไม่ mâiเป็น bpen

    I can't cook.

3 Can manage, can take it

ไหวwǎi is about strength and stamina: can your body, or your tongue, handle it? เดินไหวไหมdoen wǎi mǎi (Can you manage the walk?), กินเผ็ดไหวgin pèt wǎi (I can handle spicy food). ไม่ไหวmâi wǎi is 'I can't (take it)': too tired, too full, too spicy. On its own, ไหวไหมwǎi mǎi is a caring 'Are you okay?'.

  • กิน ginเผ็ด pètไหว wǎiไหม mǎi

    Can you handle spicy food?

  • เดิน doenไม่ mâiไหว wǎiแล้ว láew

    I can't walk any more.

4 How well

Say how well with words after the verb:

  • เก่งgèng (well, skilfully): ร้องเพลงเก่งráwng-pleeng gèng sings well
  • ได้นิดหน่อยdâi nít-nàwy (a little): พูดได้นิดหน่อยpûut dâi nít-nàwy I can speak a little
  • ไม่ค่อยได้mâi kâwy dâi (not really): อ่านไม่ค่อยได้àan mâi kâwy dâi I can't really read

Keep ไม่ค่อยได้mâi kâwy dâi after the verb. The other way round, ไม่ค่อยได้อ่านmâi kâwy dâi àan means 'I don't often get to read'.

  • พูด pûutไทย taiได้ dâiนิดหน่อย nít-nàwy

I can speak a little Thai.
