The words

- เก่ง gèng
good at (something), skilful; clever adjective
Plain g with no puff of air, and a low tone. After a verb it means 'well': ร้องเพลงเก่งráwng-pleeng gèng sings well.
- พูด pûutไทย taiเก่ง gèngมาก mâak
You speak Thai really well!
- ไม่ค่อย mâi kâwyเก่ง gèng
I'm not very good at it.

- ไหว wǎi
can manage, can handle (physically) verb
Rising tone. Falling ไหว้wâai is the wai greeting.
- ไหว wǎiไหม mǎi
Can you manage? Are you okay?
- ไม่ mâiไหว wǎiแล้ว láew
I can't take it anymore!

- ว่ายน้ำ wâai-náam
to swim verb
A สระว่ายน้ำsà-wâai-náam (swimming pool) is literally a 'pond for swimming'.
- ชอบ châwpว่ายน้ำ wâai-náam
I like swimming.
- ไป bpaiว่ายน้ำ wâai-náamกัน ganไหม mǎi
Shall we go for a swim?

to drive (a car) verb
- ใคร kraiขับรถ kàp rót
Who's driving?
- ขับรถ kàp rótช้าๆ cháa-cháaหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp
Drive slowly, please.

- มอเตอร์ไซค์ maw-dtôe-sai
motorbike, scooter noun
From English motorcycle. In Chiang Mai it's how most people get around.
- มี miiมอเตอร์ไซค์ maw-dtôe-saiไหม mǎi
Do you have a motorbike?
- เช่า châoมอเตอร์ไซค์ maw-dtôe-saiได้ dâiที่ไหน tîi-nǎiครับ kráp
Where can I rent a motorbike?
Men เช่ามอเตอร์ไซค์ได้ที่ไหนครับ Women เช่ามอเตอร์ไซค์ได้ที่ไหนคะ

- ขี่ kìi
to ride (a motorbike, a bicycle, a horse) verb
You ขี่kìi anything you sit astride: motorbikes, bicycles, horses. A car you ขับkàp (drive). Keep the tone low: falling ขี้kîi means 'poo'!
- ชอบ châwpขี่ kìiมอเตอร์ไซค์ maw-dtôe-sai
I like riding motorbikes.
- ขี่ kìiช้าๆ cháa-cháaหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp
Ride slowly, please.
Men ขี่ช้าๆ หน่อยครับ Women ขี่ช้าๆ หน่อยค่ะ

to cook verb
- ชอบ châwpทำอาหาร tam aa-hǎanไหม mǎi
Do you like cooking?
- อยาก yàakเรียน rianทำอาหาร tam aa-hǎanไทย tai
I want to learn to cook Thai food.

- ร้องเพลง ráwng-pleeng
to sing verb
Literally 'sing + song'. Karaoke is everywhere in Thailand, so sooner or later someone will hand you the mic.
- ร้องเพลง ráwng-pleengเก่ง gèngมาก mâak
You sing really well!
- ชอบ châwpร้องเพลง ráwng-pleeng
I like singing.

- กีฬา gii-laa
sport noun
- ชอบ châwpกีฬา gii-laaอะไร à-rai
What sports do you like?
- ไม่ค่อย mâi kâwyชอบ châwpกีฬา gii-laa
I'm not really into sports.

- เล่น lên
to play verb
Falling tone. พูดเล่นpûut lên (talk + play) means 'just kidding'.
- เล่น lênกีฬา gii-laaไหม mǎi
Do you play any sports?
- พูด pûutเล่น lên
Just kidding!

- ถ่ายรูป tàai-rûup
to take a photo verb
- ถ่ายรูป tàai-rûupให้ hâiหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp
Could you take a photo of me?
Men ถ่ายรูปให้หน่อยครับ Women ถ่ายรูปให้หน่อยค่ะ
- ชอบ châwpถ่ายรูป tàai-rûup
I love taking photos.

- ดีขึ้น dii kûen
to get better, to improve verb
Literally 'good-up'. Also what you say when you're over a cold: ดีขึ้นแล้วdii kûen láew.
- ดีขึ้น dii kûenแล้ว láew
It's better now.
- ภาษา paa-sǎaไทย taiดีขึ้น dii kûenมาก mâak
Your Thai has really improved.

- เรื่อยๆ rûeay-rûeay
steadily, more and more; so-so adverb
On its own it's a laid-back answer to 'how are things?': so-so, getting by.
- ดีขึ้น dii kûenเรื่อยๆ rûeay-rûeay
It's getting better and better.
- เรื่อยๆ rûeay-rûeay
So-so, same as always.

- ฟัง fang
to listen verb
Mid tone. With พูดpûut, อ่านàan and เขียนkǐan it covers all four skills.
- ฟัง fangไม่ mâiเข้าใจ kâo-jai
I hear it, but I don't understand.
- ชอบ châwpฟัง fangฝน fǒnร้องเพลง ráwng-pleeng
I love listening to Fon sing.
