Speaking practice: Can you speak Thai?

Say each phrase out loud: the speech trainer listens and gives you feedback on your tones and sounds. Then a role-play with an AI character.

Phrases to say out loud

Listen, then say each one. In the app the speech trainer scores your tones word by word.

  • ร้องเพลง ráwng-pleengเก่ง gèngมาก mâak

    You sing really well!

    เก่งgèng starts with a plain g, no puff of air, and stays low.
  • ขับรถ kàp rótไม่ mâiเป็น bpen

    I can't drive.

    ขับkàp has a puff of air on the k: hold your hand in front of your mouth and feel it.
  • ขี่ kìiมอเตอร์ไซค์ maw-dtôe-saiเป็น bpenไหม mǎi

    Can you ride a motorbike?

    A puff of air and a low tone in ขี่kìi. Let it fall and you're saying 'poo'!
  • กิน ginเผ็ด pètไหว wǎiไหม mǎi

    Can you handle spicy food?

    Two rising tones at the end: ไหวwǎi and ไหมmǎi both dip, then climb.
  • ไม่ mâiไหว wǎiแล้ว láew

    I can't take it anymore!

    Falling ไม่mâi, then rising ไหวwǎi: down, then up.
  • พูด pûutภาษา paa-sǎaไทย taiได้ dâiนิดหน่อย nít-nàwy

    I can speak a little Thai.

    ได้dâi falls; นิดหน่อยnít-nàwy goes high, then low.
  • อ่าน àanภาษา paa-sǎaไทย taiไม่ค่อย mâi kâwyได้ dâi

    I can't really read Thai.

    อ่านàan is low and long: start low and hold the aa.
  • แปลว่า bplae wâaอะไร à-rai

    What does it mean?

    แปลbplae starts with bpl: an unaspirated bp sliding straight into l.
  • ภาษา paa-sǎaไทย taiเรียกว่า rîak wâaอะไร à-raiครับ kráp

    What's it called in Thai?

    Men ภาษาไทยเรียกว่าอะไรครับ paa-sǎa tai rîak wâa à-rai krápWomen ภาษาไทยเรียกว่าอะไรคะ paa-sǎa tai rîak wâa à-rai ká

    เรียกว่าrîak wâa is two falling tones in a row.
  • ไม่ mâiเก่ง gèngหรอก ràwk

    Oh, I'm not that good.

    Plain g in เก่งgèng, then a low หรอกràwk that ends in a k you don't release.

Role-play: Your first language exchange

You're meeting Fon at Krit's café in Nimman for your first language exchange. Tell her how well you speak, read and write Thai, find out what she's good at, and ask about any words you don't know.
