Unit 3 · Lesson 5 · Speaking

Speaking practice: I like it!

Say each phrase out loud: the speech trainer listens and gives you feedback on your tones and sounds. Then a role-play with an AI character.

Phrases to say out loud

Listen, then say each one. In the app the speech trainer scores your tones word by word.

  • ไม่ mâiชอบ châwp

    I don't like it.

Two falling tones: drop your voice on both ไม่mâi and ชอบchâwp, like a firm No!
  • ชอบ châwpไหม mǎi

    Do you like it?

Falling ชอบchâwp, then rising ไหมmǎi: dip low and come back up.
  • ร้อน ráwnมาก mâak

    It's really hot.

High ร้อนráwn, then a long falling มากmâak: up, then down.
  • อร่อย à-ràwyมาก mâakเลย loei

    It's so delicious!

Two short low syllables in อร่อยà-ràwy, a big fall on มากmâak, then a level, relaxed เลยloei.
  • หวาน wǎanไป bpai

    It's too sweet.

หวานwǎan rises: dip down first, then climb. ไปbpai stays mid, with a crisp bp and no puff of air.
  • ไม่ mâiรู้ rúu

    I don't know.

    Falling ไม่mâi, then a high, long รู้rúu.
  • ผม pǒmไม่ค่อย mâi kâwyชอบ châwpหวาน wǎan

I don't really like sweet things.

Men ผมไม่ค่อยชอบหวาน pǒm mâi kâwy châwp wǎanWomen ฉันไม่ค่อยชอบหวาน chǎn mâi kâwy châwp wǎan

Your pronoun rises like หวานwǎan: ผมpǒm or ฉันchǎn. The three syllables in the middle all fall: ไม่ค่อยชอบmâi kâwy châwp.
  • ไม่ค่อย mâi kâwyหวาน wǎanนะ náครับ kráp

    Not so sweet, okay?

Men ไม่ค่อยหวานนะครับ mâi kâwy wǎan ná krápWomen ไม่ค่อยหวานนะคะ mâi kâwy wǎan ná ká

Falling, falling, rising: ไม่ค่อยหวานmâi kâwy wǎan, then a short high นะná.
  • มี miiชา chaaไทย taiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    Do you have Thai tea?

Men มีชาไทยไหมครับ mii chaa tai mǎi krápWomen มีชาไทยไหมคะ mii chaa tai mǎi ká

Three level mid tones, then ไหมmǎi rises. The question word does the work: don't add an English question lilt.
