Unit 6 · Lesson 3 · Pattern
Asking questions
One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.
How it works
1 The question word stays in place
Thai doesn't change the word order to ask a question. Say the sentence and put the question word where the answer will go, which is usually at the end. The answer simply takes its place.
- นั่น nânอะไร à-rai
What's that?
- นั่น nânสระว่ายน้ำ sà-wâai-náam
That's the swimming pool.
- ซักผ้า sák pâaได้ dâiที่ไหน tîi-nǎiครับ kráp
Where can I do my laundry?
Men ซักผ้าได้ที่ไหนครับ Women ซักผ้าได้ที่ไหนคะ
| Question | Meaning |
|---|---|
| นั่นใครnân krai | Who's that? |
| พัสดุของใครpát-sà-dù kǎwng krai | Whose parcel is it? |
| ยิมชั้นไหนyim chán nǎi | Which floor is the gym on? |
| เปิดเมื่อไหร่bpòet mûea-rài | When does it open? |
| ใช้ยังไงchái yang-ngai | How do you use it? |
| ทำอะไรtam à-rai | What are you doing? |
2 Why comes first
ทำไมtam-mai (why) is the exception: it usually starts the question. At the end it sounds more like 'what for?'.
- ทำไม tam-maiปิด bpìt
Why is it closed?
- ทำไม tam-maiไม่ mâiกิน gin
Why aren't you eating?
3 Yes/no questions: four endings
For a yes/no question, keep the statement and add an ending. Each one has its own feeling.
- ไม่สบาย mâi sà-baaiหรือเปล่า rǔue bplàao
You're not sick, are you?
- ชั้น chánแปด bpàetใช่ châiไหม mǎiครับ kráp
It's the eighth floor, right?
Men ชั้นแปดใช่ไหมครับ Women ชั้นแปดใช่ไหมคะ
| Ending | Use it to… | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ไหมmǎi | ask neutrally | ยิมเปิดไหมyim bpòet mǎi |
| หรือเปล่าrǔue bplàao | check something you suspect | ไม่สบายหรือเปล่าmâi sà-baai rǔue bplàao |
| ใช่ไหมchâi mǎi | confirm what you think | ชั้นแปดใช่ไหมchán bpàet châi mǎi |
| เหรอrǒe | react with surprise | ปิดเหรอbpìt rǒe |
4 Answering
Thai has no all-purpose 'yes' or 'no'. Answer with the verb or adjective from the question, or with ไม่mâi + it. ใช่châi and ไม่ใช่mâi châi answer ใช่ไหมchâi mǎi questions and questions about what or who something is.
| Question | Yes | No |
|---|---|---|
| เปิดไหมbpòet mǎi | เปิดbpòet | ไม่เปิดmâi bpòet |
| มีไหมmii mǎi | มีmii | ไม่มีmâi mii |
| ได้ไหมdâi mǎi | ได้dâi | ไม่ได้mâi dâi |
| ชั้นแปดใช่ไหมchán bpàet châi mǎi | ใช่châi | ไม่ใช่mâi châi |
Tips
- •Don't raise your voice at the end like in English: every word keeps its own tone. ไหมmǎi rises only because it's a rising-tone word.
- •After a noun, ไหนnǎi means 'which': ชั้นไหนchán nǎi (which floor?), ห้องไหนhâwng nǎi (which room?).
- •In chats and casual speech, ไหมmǎi often becomes มั้ยmái and หรือเปล่าrǔue bplàao becomes ป่าวbpàao.
