Unit 6 · Lesson 5 · Speaking

Speaking practice: Questions, questions

Say each phrase out loud: the speech trainer listens and gives you feedback on your tones and sounds. Then a role-play with an AI character.

Phrases to say out loud

Listen, then say each one. In the app the speech trainer scores your tones word by word.

  • นั่น nânใคร krai

    Who's that?

ใครkrai is mid and level, with k and r said together. Don't let your voice go up at the end: Thai questions keep their tones.
  • ห้องน้ำ hâwng-náamชั้น chánไหน nǎiครับ kráp

Which floor is the bathroom on?

Men ห้องน้ำชั้นไหนครับ hâwng-náam chán nǎi krápWomen ห้องน้ำชั้นไหนคะ hâwng-náam chán nǎi ká

Falling ห้องhâwng, then high น้ำnáam and ชั้นchán, then rising ไหนnǎi.
  • ซักผ้า sák pâaได้ dâiที่ไหน tîi-nǎiครับ kráp

Where can I do my laundry?

Men ซักผ้าได้ที่ไหนครับ sák pâa dâi tîi-nǎi krápWomen ซักผ้าได้ที่ไหนคะ sák pâa dâi tîi-nǎi ká

In ที่ไหนtîi-nǎi the voice falls, then rises: the rise belongs to ไหนnǎi, not to a 'question voice'.
  • ยิม yimเปิด bpòetเมื่อไหร่ mûea-ràiครับ kráp

    When does the gym open?

Men ยิมเปิดเมื่อไหร่ครับ yim bpòet mûea-rài krápWomen ยิมเปิดเมื่อไหร่คะ yim bpòet mûea-rài ká

เปิดbpòet has the vowel oe, like 'er' in 'her' without the r, and a low tone.
  • ไม่สบาย mâi sà-baaiหรือเปล่า rǔue bplàao

    Are you feeling unwell?

เปล่าbplàao starts with an unaspirated bp (no puff of air) and stays low: don't lift it into a question.
  • ใช้ cháiยังไง yang-ngaiครับ kráp

    How do you use it?

    Men ใช้ยังไงครับ chái yang-ngai krápWomen ใช้ยังไงคะ chái yang-ngai ká

ใช้chái (use) is high; falling ใช่châi means 'yes'. ยังไงyang-ngai stays mid and level.
  • ปิด bpìtเหรอ rǒe

    It's closed? Really?

เหรอrǒe is a rising word, so the surprise is already built in.
  • ชั้น chánแปด bpàetใช่ châiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    It's the eighth floor, right?

Men ชั้นแปดใช่ไหมครับ chán bpàet châi mǎi krápWomen ชั้นแปดใช่ไหมคะ chán bpàet châi mǎi ká

ชั้นchán (floor) is high; rising ฉันchǎn means 'I'. Listen for the difference.
