  • ที่ไหน tîi-nǎi

    where question word

    Like most question words it goes where the answer goes, usually at the end.

    • กิน ginข้าว kâaoที่ไหน tîi-nǎiดี dii

      Where shall we eat?

    • จ่าย jàaiเงิน ngoenได้ dâiที่ไหน tîi-nǎiครับ kráp

      Where can I pay?

      Men จ่ายเงินได้ที่ไหนครับ Women จ่ายเงินได้ที่ไหนคะ

  • ใคร krai

    who question word

    Starts with the kr cluster: k and r together. In fast speech many Bangkok people drop the r.

    • ใคร kraiชอบ châwpเผ็ด pèt

      Who likes spicy food?

    • ของ kǎwngใคร krai

      Whose is it?

  • เมื่อไหร่ mûea-rài

    when question word

    Usually at the end: ไปเมื่อไหร่bpai mûea-rài (when are you going?).

    • ไป bpaiเมื่อไหร่ mûea-rài

      When are you going?

    • จ่าย jàaiเงิน ngoenเมื่อไหร่ mûea-rài

      When do I pay?

  • ทำไม tam-mai

    why question word

    Unlike the other question words, it usually comes first. At the end it sounds like 'what for?'.

    • ทำไม tam-maiไม่ mâiกิน gin

      Why aren't you eating?

    • ทำไม tam-maiแพง paengมาก mâak

      Why is it so expensive?

  • ยังไง yang-ngai

    how question word

    Spoken Thai; on signs and in writing you'll see อย่างไรyàang-rai.

    • ทำ tamยังไง yang-ngaiดี dii

      What should I do?

    • ไป bpaiยังไง yang-ngai

      How do I get there?

  • หรือเปล่า rǔue bplàao

    …or not? (checking a yes/no question) question word

    For checking something you suspect, like '…, aren't you?'. In speech it's often shortened to รึเปล่าrúe bplàao.

    • หิว hǐuหรือเปล่า rǔue bplàao

      Are you hungry?

    • เผ็ด pètหรือเปล่า rǔue bplàao

      Is it spicy or not?

  • เหรอ rǒe

    really?; oh, is it? (surprised question) particle

    Put it after something you've just heard to show surprise or check it: ปิดเหรอbpìt rǒe (it's closed?).

    • ไม่สบาย mâi sà-baaiเหรอ rǒe

      Oh, you're not feeling well?

    • แพง paengเหรอ rǒe

      It's expensive? Really?

  • คือ kuue

    is, means (identifying or defining) verb

    คือkuue identifies or explains what something is; for jobs and nationalities use เป็นbpen.

    • นั่น nânคือ kuueอะไร à-rai

      What is that?

    • ข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gàiคือ kuueอะไร à-rai

      What is khao man gai?

  • นั่น nân

    that (over there); that is… pronoun

    นี่nîi is this, close to you; นั่นnân is that, a bit further away.

    • นั่น nânใคร krai

      Who's that?

    • นั่น nânของ kǎwngใคร krai

      Whose is that?

  • ของ kǎwng

    of, belonging to; things, stuff preposition

    Thing + ของkǎwng + owner, and the thing is often left out: ของคุณkǎwng kun (yours). On its own ของkǎwng means things, stuff.

    • ของ kǎwngคุณ kunใช่ châiไหม mǎi

      It's yours, right?

    • ของ kǎwngเยอะ yóeมาก mâak

      That's a lot of stuff!

  • ทำ tam

    to do, to make verb

    ทำอาหารtam aa-hǎan (make food) means to cook.

    • ทำ tamอะไร à-rai

      What are you doing?

    • ชอบ châwpทำ tamอาหาร aa-hǎan

      I like cooking.

  • ใช้ chái

    to use verb

    High tone. With a falling tone, ใช่châi means yes, that's right.

    • ใช้ cháiบัตร bàtได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Can I use a card?

      Men ใช้บัตรได้ไหมครับ Women ใช้บัตรได้ไหมคะ

    • ใช้ cháiเงินสด ngoen-sòtหรือ rǔueบัตร bàt

      Cash or card?

  • ไม่สบาย mâi sà-baai

    sick, unwell adjective

    Literally 'not comfortable', from the สบายsà-baai in สบายดีsà-baai dii: the everyday way to say you're ill.

    • เขา kǎoไม่สบาย mâi sà-baai

      She's not well.

    • ไม่สบาย mâi sà-baaiมาก mâak

      I feel really sick.
