Unit 10 · Lesson 3 · Pattern
Future and plans with จะ
One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.
How it works
1 What you're going to do
Thai verbs never change for time. For plans and the future, put จะjà right before the verb: จะไปjà bpai will go, จะทำอะไรjà tam à-rai what are you going to do?
For not, ไม่mâi comes after จะjà: จะไม่ไปjà mâi bpai I'm not going.
- จะ jàไป bpaiจตุจักร jà-dtù-jàk
I'm going to Chatuchak.
- จะ jàทำ tamอะไร à-rai
What are you going to do?
- วันอาทิตย์ wan-aa-títจะ jàไม่ mâiไป bpai
I'm not going on Sunday.
2 Time words: at the start or the end
Time words like พรุ่งนี้prûng-níi, วันเสาร์wan-sǎo or ตอนเช้าdtawn-cháao go at the start or the end of the sentence: พรุ่งนี้จะไปตลาดprûng-níi jà bpai dtà-làat or จะไปตลาดพรุ่งนี้jà bpai dtà-làat prûng-níi. Put the day first, then the part of the day: วันเสาร์ตอนเช้าwan-sǎo dtawn-cháao Saturday morning.
Once a time word shows it's the future, Thais often drop จะjà: พรุ่งนี้ไปprûng-níi bpai I'm going tomorrow. The past works the same way, with no change to the verb: เมื่อวานไปตลาดmûea-waan bpai dtà-làat I went to the market yesterday.
- พรุ่งนี้ prûng-níiจะ jàไป bpaiตลาด dtà-làat
Tomorrow I'm going to the market.
- จะ jàไป bpaiตลาด dtà-làatพรุ่งนี้ prûng-níi
I'm going to the market tomorrow.
- วันเสาร์ wan-sǎoตอนเช้า dtawn-cháaoว่าง wâang
I'm free on Saturday morning.
3 Asking about plans
Ask if someone is free with ว่างไหมwâang mǎi, and about their plans with จะjà + a question word: จะไปไหนjà bpai nǎi where are you going?, จะไปเมื่อไหร่jà bpai mûea-rài when are you going?
To invite someone along, add ด้วยกันdûay gan (together): ไปด้วยกันไหมbpai dûay gan mǎi shall we go together?
- เสาร์อาทิตย์ sǎo-aa-títนี้ níiว่าง wâangไหม mǎi
Are you free this weekend?
- จะ jàไป bpaiไหน nǎi
Where are you going?
- ไป bpaiด้วย dûayกัน ganไหม mǎi
Shall we go together?
| Yes | No |
|---|---|
| ไปbpai I'll go! | ไม่ว่างmâi wâang I'm not free. |
| ไปด้วยbpai dûay I'll come along. | ยุ่งนิดหน่อยyûng nít-nàwy I'm a bit busy. |
4 Suggesting something better
To suggest a better plan, say it and add ดีกว่าdii gwàa (it's better): ไปตอนเช้าดีกว่าbpai dtawn-cháao dii gwàa let's go in the morning instead, นั่งรถไฟฟ้าดีกว่าnâng rót-fai-fáa dii gwàa let's take the skytrain instead. It sounds friendly, not bossy.
- ไป bpaiตอนเช้า dtawn-cháaoดีกว่า dii gwàa
Let's go in the morning instead.
- นั่ง nângรถไฟฟ้า rót-fai-fáaดีกว่า dii gwàa
Let's take the skytrain instead.
- กิน ginที่นี่ tîi-nîiดีกว่า dii gwàa
Let's eat here instead.
Tips
- •จะjà is short and unstressed: the stress falls on the verb after it.
- •Thai has no past or future endings: ไปbpai is go, went and will go. Time words and จะjà do the work.
- •นี้níi after a time word means this: เสาร์อาทิตย์นี้sǎo-aa-tít níi this weekend, ปีนี้bpii níi this year.
