Phrases to say out loud
Listen, then say each one. In the app the speech trainer scores your tones word by word.
- วันจันทร์ wan-janว่าง wâang
I'm free on Monday.
วันจันทร์wan-jan is mid, mid: keep both syllables flat and level. - วันพุธ wan-pútว่าง wâangไหม mǎi
Are you free on Wednesday?
พุธpút is high and short: lift it and stop on the t. - วันศุกร์ wan-sùkยุ่ง yûngมาก mâak
I'm really busy on Friday.
ศุกร์sùk is low and clipped: drop low and cut it off at the k. - วันเสาร์ wan-sǎoว่าง wâang
I'm free on Saturday.
เสาร์sǎo rises: dip low, then glide up. ว่างwâang falls right after it. - พรุ่งนี้ prûng-níiจะ jàไป bpaiตลาด dtà-làat
Tomorrow I'm going to the market.
Keep จะjà short, light and low, and stress the verb after it: jà BPAI. - เสาร์อาทิตย์ sǎo-aa-títนี้ níiจะ jàทำ tamอะไร à-rai
What are you doing this weekend?
เสาร์อาทิตย์sǎo-aa-tít: rising, mid, high. Three different tones in one word. - ไป bpaiตอนเช้า dtawn-cháaoดีกว่า dii gwàa
Let's go in the morning instead.
เช้าcháao is high and long; กว่าgwàa is low, with a gw cluster. - ฝนตก fǒn dtòkแล้ว láew
It's started raining.
Rising ฝนfǒn, low and clipped ตกdtòk, high แล้วláew. - ต้องไปแล้ว dtâwng bpai láewนะ ná
I've got to go now, okay?
ต้องdtâwng starts with an unaspirated dt: no puff of air, as in stop.
Role-play: Making weekend plans
Nam asks what you're doing this weekend and wants to go somewhere together. Agree on a plan: where, which day and what time of day.
