Phrases to say out loud

Listen, then say each one. In the app the speech trainer scores your tones word by word.

  • จะ jàคิดถึง kít-tǔengทุก túkคน kon

    I'll miss you all.

    ถึงtǔeng has the ue vowel: lips spread, tongue pulled back, no 'oo'. Then let the tone rise.
  • หวัง wǎngว่า wâaจะ jàได้ dâiเจอ joeกัน ganอีก ìik

    I hope we'll see each other again.

    หวังwǎng rises: start low and climb. Then drop on ว่าwâa.
  • คิดถึง kít-tǔengบ้าน bâan

    I miss home.

    High คิดkít, rising ถึงtǔeng, then a falling บ้านbâan.
  • กระทง grà-tongที่ tîiฝน fǒnทำ tamสวย sǔayที่สุด tîi-sùt

    The krathong Fon made is the prettiest.

    ที่tîi is a long ii that falls. Keep it apart from the ue in ถึงtǔeng.
  • สัญญา sǎn-yaaว่า wâaจะ jàกลับ glàpมา maaอีก ìik

    I promise I'll come back.

    สัญญาsǎn-yaa: a rising syllable, then a mid one that starts with y.
  • เดินทางปลอดภัย doen-taang bplàwt-paiนะ náครับ kráp

    Have a safe trip!

    Men เดินทางปลอดภัยนะครับ doen-taang bplàwt-pai ná krápWomen เดินทางปลอดภัยนะคะ doen-taang bplàwt-pai ná ká

    ปลอดbplàwt is bp and l together, with a low tone. Don't drop the l.
  • ติดต่อ dtìt-dtàwกัน ganนะ ná

    Let's keep in touch.

    ติดต่อdtìt-dtàw: two dt sounds with no puff of air, both low.
  • ไว้ wáiเจอ joeกัน ganใหม่ màiนะ ná

    See you again soon.

    High ไว้wái, mid เจอjoe and กันgan, low ใหม่mài, then a light, high นะná.
  • คน konไทย taiใจดี jai-diiมาก mâak

    Thai people are so kind.

    Keep คนkon, ไทยtai and ใจดีjai-dii level and mid, then fall on มากmâak.

Role-play: Last night in Chiang Mai

After Loy Krathong, Fon walks you home along the river. It's your last night before your trip home: tell her what you'll miss and what you hope for, and make her a promise.

    Mae Noi said she'd make me khao soi again.
