Unit 24 · Lesson 3 · Pattern

The one that…: ที่ and ว่า

One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.

How it works

Join a description to a noun with ที่tîi (the friend who…, the place that…), and report what people say, hear and hope with ว่าwâa.

1 The one that…

Put ที่tîi after a noun, then say something about it: เพื่อนที่อยู่กรุงเทพpûean tîi yùu grung-têep the friend who lives in Bangkok, ร้านที่เราชอบráan tîi rao châwp the place we like, กระทงที่ฝนทำgrà-tong tîi fǒn tam the krathong Fon made. One word does the job of who, which and that, and unlike English, you can't leave it out.

It's the same ที่tîi as 'at' in ที่เชียงใหม่tîi chiang-mài. Right after a noun and before a whole clause, it means 'that'.

  • เพื่อน pûeanที่ tîiอยู่ yùuกรุงเทพ grung-têepมา maaเชียงใหม่ chiang-mài

My friend who lives in Bangkok has come to Chiang Mai.

  • กระทง grà-tongที่ tîiฝน fǒnทำ tamสวย sǔayที่สุด tîi-sùt

The krathong Fon made is the prettiest.

  • จะ jàคิดถึง kít-tǔengร้าน ráanข้าวซอย kâao-sawyที่ tîiเรา raoไป bpaiกิน ginบ่อย bàwy

I'll miss the khao soi place we often go to.

Noun + ที่ + description
ThaiMeaning
คนที่ใส่เสื้อสีขาวkon tîi sài sûea sǐi kǎaothe person in the white shirt
ร้านที่เราชอบráan tîi rao châwpthe place we like
เพื่อนที่ใจดีpûean tîi jai-diikind friends, friends who are kind
วันที่เราเจอกันwan tîi rao joe ganthe day we met

2 Passing on what people say, hear and hope

You know คิดว่าkít wâa (I think that…). The same ว่าwâa follows other verbs: บอกว่าbàwk wâa (say that), ได้ยินว่าdâi-yin wâa (hear that), หวังว่าwǎng wâa (hope that), สัญญาว่าsǎn-yaa wâa (promise that).

After ว่าwâa, just say the sentence: nothing changes when you pass it on. แม่บอกว่าจะทำกระทงให้mâe bàwk wâa jà tam grà-tong hâi Mum said she'd make us a krathong.

  • แม่ mâeบอก bàwkว่า wâaให้ hâiอธิษฐาน à-tít-tǎanก่อน gàwn

Mum says to make a wish first.

  • ได้ยิน dâi-yinว่า wâaน้ำ náamจะ jàมา maaเชียงใหม่ chiang-mài

I heard Nam is coming to Chiang Mai.

  • หวัง wǎngว่า wâaจะ jàได้ dâiเจอ joeกัน ganอีก ìik

I hope we'll see each other again.

3 Saying goodbye

Thai goodbyes are light: a wish and a promise rather than a big farewell.

  • คิดถึงkít-tǔeng + person or place: จะคิดถึงทุกคนjà kít-tǔeng túk kon I'll miss you all.
  • จะjà + verb + อีกìik: จะกลับมาอีกjà glàp maa ìik I'll come back again.
  • ไว้wái + verb + ใหม่mài: ไว้เจอกันใหม่wái joe gan mài see you again (literally 'let's save it until we meet again').
  • The wishes: ติดต่อกันนะdtìt-dtàw gan ná keep in touch, เดินทางปลอดภัยนะdoen-taang bplàwt-pai ná have a safe trip, โชคดีนะchôok-dii ná good luck.
  • จะ jàคิดถึง kít-tǔengทุก túkคน kon

    I'll miss you all.

  • ผม pǒmจะ jàกลับ glàpมา maaอีก ìikแน่นอน nâe-nawn

    I'll definitely come back.

    Men ผมจะกลับมาอีกแน่นอน Women ฉันจะกลับมาอีกแน่นอน

  • ไว้ wáiเจอ joeกัน ganใหม่ màiนะ ná

    See you again soon.

Tips

  • •To ask a question, use ใครkrai or อะไรà-rai, never ที่tîi: ใครทำกระทงkrai tam grà-tong Who made the krathong?
  • •In fast speech Thais often swallow the ว่าwâa (แม่บอกอร่อยmâe bàwk à-ràwy), but keep it while you're learning.
  • •You've used a ที่tîi like this since your first week: ยินดีที่ได้รู้จักyin-dii tîi dâi rúu-jàk, glad (that I) got to know you.
  • •ตั้งแต่dtâng-dtàe looks back over time: ตั้งแต่มาอยู่เชียงใหม่dtâng-dtàe maa yùu chiang-mài since I came to live in Chiang Mai.
