  • คิด kít

    to think verb

    Opinions start with คิดว่าkít wâa (think that). Ask for one with คิดว่ายังไงkít wâa yang-ngai: literally 'think how?'

    • ขอ kǎwคิด kítก่อน gàwnนะ náครับ kráp

      Let me think about it first.

      Men ขอคิดก่อนนะครับ Women ขอคิดก่อนนะคะ

    • คิด kítว่า wâaยังไง yang-ngai

      What do you think?

  • ว่า wâa

    that (after think, say, hope: think that …) conjunction

    It links a verb to what you think or say: คิดว่าkít wâa (think that). Casually, Thais drop the verb: ผมว่าpǒm wâa or ฉันว่าchǎn wâa means 'I reckon'. You know it from แปลว่าbplae wâa and เรียกว่าrîak wâa.

    • ผม pǒmว่า wâaดี diiนะ ná

      I reckon it's good.

      Men ผมว่าดีนะ Women ฉันว่าดีนะ

    • คิด kítว่า wâaไม่ mâiไกล glai

      I don't think it's far.

  • เพราะ práw

    because conjunction

    เพราะว่าpráw wâa means the same. It answers a ทำไมtam-mai (why) question, and เพราะอะไรpráw à-rai (because of what?) is another way to ask why.

    • ชอบ châwpเชียงใหม่ chiang-màiเพราะ práwคน konใจดี jai-dii

      I like Chiang Mai because the people are kind.

    • เพราะ práwฝนตก fǒn dtòk

      Because it's raining.

  • ก็เลย gâw-loei

    so, that's why conjunction

    The result comes after it: ฝนตกก็เลยไม่ไปfǒn dtòk gâw-loei mâi bpai (it rained, so I didn't go). It's the mirror image of เพราะpráw.

    • ฝนตก fǒn dtòkก็เลย gâw-loeiไม่ mâiไป bpai

      It was raining, so I didn't go.

    • หิว hǐuก็เลย gâw-loeiกิน ginก่อน gàwn

      I was hungry, so I ate first.

  • แต่ dtàe

    but conjunction

    Low and short, with an unaspirated dt: no puff of air.

    • อร่อย à-ràwyแต่ dtàeเผ็ด pètมาก mâak

      It's tasty, but really spicy.

    • ถูก tùukแต่ dtàeไกล glai

      It's cheap, but it's far.

  • เห็นด้วย hěn-dûay

    to agree verb

    Disagree gently with ไม่ค่อยเห็นด้วยmâi kâwy hěn-dûay (I don't really agree): a flat ไม่เห็นด้วยmâi hěn-dûay sounds blunt.

    • เห็นด้วย hěn-dûayมาก mâak

      I totally agree.

    • ไม่ค่อย mâi kâwyเห็นด้วย hěn-dûay

      I don't really agree.

  • ไม่แน่ใจ mâi nâe-jai

    not sure; I'm not sure phrase

    Also a gentle way to doubt what someone said: ไม่แน่ใจนะmâi nâe-jai ná (I'm not so sure about that).

    • ยัง yangไม่แน่ใจ mâi nâe-jai

      I'm not sure yet.

    • ไม่แน่ใจ mâi nâe-jaiเหมือนกัน mǔean-gan

      I'm not sure either.

  • แล้วแต่ láew-dtàe

    it depends (on); up to (you) phrase

    Thais say it a lot to stay easygoing and let others choose: แล้วแต่คุณláew-dtàe kun (up to you), แล้วแต่คนláew-dtàe kon (it depends on the person).

    • แล้วแต่ láew-dtàeคุณ kun

      It's up to you.

    • แล้วแต่ láew-dtàeคน kon

      It depends on the person.

  • สำหรับ sǎm-ràp

    for; as far as … is concerned (for me = in my view) preposition

    At the start of an opinion, สำหรับผมsǎm-ràp pǒm or สำหรับฉันsǎm-ràp chǎn means 'for me, in my view'.

    • อันนี้ an níiสำหรับ sǎm-ràpคุณ kun

      This one is for you.

    • สำหรับ sǎm-ràpผม pǒmอาหาร aa-hǎanไทย taiอร่อย à-ràwyที่สุด tîi-sùt

      For me, Thai food is the best.

      Men สำหรับผมอาหารไทยอร่อยที่สุด Women สำหรับฉันอาหารไทยอร่อยที่สุด

  • ส่วนตัว sùan-dtua

    personally; private adverb

    At the start of an opinion it means 'personally'; after a noun it means 'private': ห้องส่วนตัวhâwng sùan-dtua (a private room).

    • ส่วนตัว sùan-dtuaชอบ châwpเชียงใหม่ chiang-màiมาก mâakกว่า gwàa

      Personally, I prefer Chiang Mai.

    • ส่วนตัว sùan-dtuaไม่ค่อย mâi kâwyเห็นด้วย hěn-dûayนะ ná

      Personally, I don't really agree.

  • โดยเฉพาะ dooi-chà-páw

    especially adverb

    • ชอบ châwpผลไม้ pǒn-lá-máaiโดยเฉพาะ dooi-chà-páwมะม่วง má-mûang

      I like fruit, especially mangoes.

    • ร้อน ráwnมาก mâakโดยเฉพาะ dooi-chà-páwตอนบ่าย dtawn-bàai

      It's really hot, especially in the afternoon.

  • น่าสนใจ nâa-sǒn-jai

    interesting adjective

    น่าnâa + verb means 'worth …ing': น่าสนใจnâa-sǒn-jai (interesting), น่ารักnâa-rák (lovely), and น่าอยู่nâa-yùu in the next lesson (nice to live in).

    • น่าสนใจ nâa-sǒn-jaiมาก mâak

      That's really interesting.

    • เรื่อง rûeangนี้ níiน่าสนใจ nâa-sǒn-jai

      This story is interesting.

  • เบื่อ bùea

    bored; fed up (with), sick of adjective

    What you're sick of comes straight after it: เบื่อรถติดbùea rót dtìt (sick of the traffic).

    • เบื่อ bùeaมาก mâak

      I'm so bored.

    • เบื่อ bùeaรถติด rót dtìt

      I'm sick of the traffic.
