Sign (นาฬิกาทราย): meaning and key lines

BOWKYLION

What the song is about

นาฬิกาทรายnaa-lí-gaa saai, “Sign (Hourglass)”, is a T-pop song by BOWKYLION (2026). BOWKYLION's 2026 number one, at the top of the Official Thailand Chart and of Billboard's Thailand Songs: love as an hourglass, turned over again and again until the sand runs out. Its pop melody borrows from traditional Thai singing, and its lines are clear B1 Thai about holding on and letting go: every time, as if, never wanted to be apart, can't stay forever, time's up.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. แต่ dtàeทุก túkครั้ง krángที่ tîiได้ dâiกอด gàwtเธอ toe

But every time I get to hold you,

ทุกครั้งที่túk kráng tîi + clause = every time (that)…: ทุกครั้งที่ฝนตกtúk kráng tîi fǒn dtòk = every time it rains. ได้dâi before a verb = to get to, to have the chance to: ได้กอดเธอdâi gàwt toe = to get to hold you. ครั้งkráng = a time, an occasion: ครั้งแรกkráng râek = the first time. The sentence ends in the next line.
  2. เหมือน mǔeanว่า wâaใจ jaiยัง yangมี miiความหวัง kwaam-wǎng

it's as if my heart still has hope.

เหมือนว่าmǔean wâa + clause = it's as if, it seems that: เหมือนว่าจะฝนตกmǔean wâa jà fǒn dtòk = it looks like it's going to rain. ใจjai = heart, mind. ยังมีyang mii = still has. ความหวังkwaam-wǎng = hope: หวังwǎng is 'to hope', and ความkwaam in front turns it into a noun.
  3. ไม่ mâiเคย koeiมี miiวัน wanไหน nǎiที่ tîiอยาก yàakห่าง hàang

There's never been a day I wanted to be apart from you.

ไม่เคยมีmâi koei mii = there has never been: ไม่เคยmâi koei + verb = never (have). วันไหนwan nǎi = which day, any day; after a negative, no day at all. ห่างhàang = apart, at a distance: อยู่ห่างกันyùu hàang gan = to live apart; on signs, เว้นระยะห่างwén rá-yá hàang = keep your distance.
  4. แต่ dtàeก็ gâwรู้ rúuคง kongไม่ mâiได้ dâiอยู่ yùuตลอดไป dtà-làwt bpai

but I know I probably can't stay forever.

The line before says she wants to stay close by her love's side. ตลอดไปdtà-làwt bpai = forever: ตลอดdtà-làwt = all through, the whole time (ตลอดทั้งวันdtà-làwt táng wan = all day long). คงไม่ได้kong mâi dâi + verb = probably won't get to: คงkong = probably, and ไม่ได้mâi dâi + verb = not get to. แต่ก็รู้dtàe gâw rúu = but (I) know all the same.
  5. รัก rákฉัน chǎnเป็น bpenดั่ง dàngนาฬิกาทราย naa-lí-gaa saai

My love is like an hourglass.

The title, and the image of the whole song: an hourglass runs out, and can be turned over to start again. นาฬิกาทรายnaa-lí-gaa saai is literally a 'sand clock': นาฬิกาnaa-lí-gaa = clock, watch, and ทรายsaai = sand. เป็นดั่งbpen dàng = to be like: ดั่งdàng is a poetic เหมือนmǔean (like), common in songs. รักฉันrák chǎn = my love, literally 'love (of) me': Thai can leave out ของkǎwng, 'of'. The next line says it will crumble away, however much she gives.
  6. วันนี้ wan-níiนาฬิกาทราย naa-lí-gaa saaiหมด mòtเวลา wee-laa

Today the hourglass has run out of time.

หมดmòt = to run out, to be all gone: หมดเวลาmòt wee-laa = time's up, what a teacher says at the end of an exam; ข้าวหมดแล้วkâao mòt láew = the rice is all gone; at a shop, หมดแล้วค่ะmòt láew kâ = it's sold out. วันนี้wan-níi = today. The next line: it's time to go.
  7. แม้ máeเวลา wee-laaผ่าน pàanไป bpaiแต่ dtàeฉัน chǎnไม่ mâiเคย koeiผ่าน pàan

Even though time goes by, I never get over it.

A play on ผ่านpàan, to pass: เวลาผ่านไปwee-laa pàan bpai = time passes, and ไม่เคยผ่านmâi koei pàan = I've never got past it, never got over it. ผ่านpàan is also to pass a test (สอบผ่านsàwp pàan) and to go past a place (ผ่านวัดpàan wát, to pass the temple). แม้máe… แต่dtàe… = although…, still… The reason comes in the line before: her heart is scarred.

The culture behind it

BOWKYLION (Nichada Veerasuthimas), the singer the Bangkok Post calls the queen of sad songs, wrote, composed and co-produced "นาฬิกาทรายnaa-lí-gaa saai" herself, and released it on 6 July 2026. Her label explains the image: unlike an ordinary clock, an hourglass can be turned over when it runs out and start again, like someone close to giving up on love who keeps forgiving and starting over, while the hurt underneath never heals, until one day the sand is gone for good. The video tells it as a love story between two women.

It went straight to the top: number one on YouTube's music trends in Thailand, on the Official Thailand Chart, and on Billboard's Thailand Songs in its first week there. Its pop melody leans on traditional Thai singing, with ลูกเอื้อนlûuk-ûean, the ornamented runs that stretch one syllable over many notes, and these set off an online challenge in which celebrities and fans showed off their own. In August she released a special version with Joey Phuwasit, the singer who plays the พิณpin on F.HERO's กุหลาบgù-làap. It is her second song here, after ที่คั่นหนังสือtîi-kân-nǎng-sǔue (Sometimes).
