- อยู่ yùuไกล glaiจน jonสุดสายตา sùt sǎai-dtaa
So far away, out past where my eyes can see
The song's first words. อยู่ไกลyùu glai = to be far away (อยู่yùu = to be somewhere). จนjon = until, so much that: ไกลจนglai jon… = so far that… สุดสายตาsùt sǎai-dtaa = as far as the eye can see (สุดsùt = the very end, สายตาsǎai-dtaa = your eyesight, the line of your gaze): a field that stretches สุดสายตาsùt sǎai-dtaa goes all the way to the horizon. The next line: he can't even see that they're close. - นึกถึง núek tǔengครั้งแรก kráng-râekเรา raoพบ pópกัน gan
I think back to the first time we met
นึกถึงnúek tǔeng = to think of, to be reminded of: a memory comes back to you. คิดถึงkít-tǔeng is to miss someone. ครั้งแรกkráng-râek = the first time (ครั้งkráng = time, occasion; แรกrâek = first). พบกันpóp gan = to meet (each other): พบpóp is the written, song word; in speech you'd say เจอกันjoe gan. The next line: back then, they never had to be apart. - รัก rákเรา raoยัง yangไม่ mâiเก่า gàoลง longใช่ไหม châi mǎi
Our love hasn't grown old, has it?
รักเราrák rao = our love: the owner can follow a noun without ของkǎwng. ยังไม่yang mâi = not yet. เก่าgào = old, for things (an old person is แก่gàe); เก่าลงgào long = to grow old, to wear out: ลงlong (down) after an adjective means becoming less. ใช่ไหมchâi mǎi at the end = …, right?, …, hasn't it?: ร้อนใช่ไหมráwn châi mǎi = it's hot, isn't it? The next line asks if time has moved on and changed her heart. - เธอ toeเธอ toeยัง yangคิดถึง kít-tǔengฉัน chǎnไหม mǎi
You… do you still miss me?
The chorus opens on the title, เธอtoe, held long before the question: เธอยังคิดถึงฉันไหมtoe yang kít-tǔeng chǎn mǎi = do you still miss me? ยังyang + verb = still. คิดถึงkít-tǔeng = to miss someone, the everyday word: คิดถึงนะkít-tǔeng ná = I miss you. ไหมmǎi at the end turns it into a yes/no question. เธอtoe is 'you' to a partner and also 'she'. - แต่ dtàeฉัน chǎnยังคง yang-kongมีแต่ mii dtàeเธอ toeอยู่ yùuใน naiหัวใจ hǔa-jaiเสมอ sà-mǒe
But I still have only you in my heart, always
The line before it admits that time can change people's hearts when they're apart; this is his answer. มีแต่mii dtàe = there's only, nothing but: มีแต่เธอmii dtàe toe = only you (on its own, แต่dtàe = but). ยังคงyang-kong = still, the written, song form of ยังyang. อยู่ในหัวใจyùu nai hǔa-jai = to be in your heart. เสมอsà-mǒe = always.

Grammar in this song
ยังyang + verb = still: ยังคิดถึงyang kít-tǔeng (still miss), ยังรักyang rák (still love). ยังไม่yang mâi + verb = not yet: ยังไม่เก่าลงyang mâi gào long, ยังไม่กินyang mâi gin (I haven't eaten yet). Songs often say ยังคงyang-kong for ยังyang.
Adjective + ลงlong = getting less, going down: เก่าลงgào long (wearing out), ถูกลงtùuk long (getting cheaper), ช้าลงcháa long (slowing down); its opposite is adjective + ขึ้นkûen: ดีขึ้นdii kûen = getting better. ใช่ไหมchâi mǎi at the end checks something you believe: เธอยังคิดถึงฉันใช่ไหมtoe yang kít-tǔeng chǎn châi mǎi = you still miss me, don't you?
The culture behind it
COCKTAIL, the rock band of singer and songwriter Ohm (Puntapol Prasarnrajkit), released "เธอtoe" on 28 April 2014 on Genie Records, a GMM Grammy label; it is on their album The Lords of Misery (2014). Ohm wrote the music, and the words with his wife, Nannapatt; Violette Wautier sings the backing vocals. The video was the first that Wichian Roekpaisan, Genie Records' managing director, had directed in 20 years: a love story across lifetimes that begins in 1974, near the end of the Vietnam War, with Ananda Everingham as an American soldier in love with a Vietnamese girl. This upload is the official cut version of it.
The band's Mai Pen Rong is here too. Distance is a favourite theme of Thai love songs: ไกลglai (far), ห่างไกลhàang glai (far apart) and คิดถึงkít-tǔeng (to miss), and คิดถึงนะkít-tǔeng ná is the message couples far apart send each other.
