What the song is about
ลืมไปแล้วว่าลืมยังไงluuem bpai láew wâa luuem yang-ngai, “Fade (Forgot How to Forget)”, is a T-pop song by Jeff Satur (2022). One of Jeff Satur's biggest hits: he told her she was free to go, and now he can't forget her, because he has forgotten how to forget. Its lines teach all I can do is, it's me who, how much does it take, only just, still … like this, and the slang 'let it blur' for trying not to think about someone.

- แต่ dtàeพอ pawเอาเข้าจริง ao kâo jingเป็น bpenฉัน chǎnที่ tîiไม่ mâiไป bpaiไหน nǎi
But when it came to it, I'm the one who hasn't gone anywhere.
Just before this, he says he once told her it was fine if she had to go. พอpaw + clause = when, as soon as, and เอาเข้าจริงao kâo jing = when it comes down to it, in reality: พอเอาเข้าจริงpaw ao kâo jing = when it actually came to it. เป็นฉันที่bpen chǎn tîi… = it's me who…: เป็นเขาที่ลืมbpen kǎo tîi luuem = he's the one who forgot. Men sing ฉันchǎn (I) too: in songs it is everyone's 'I', though a man says ผมpǒm when he talks. After a negative, ไหนnǎi (where) means anywhere: ไม่ไปไหนmâi bpai nǎi = not going anywhere, still right here. - ทำ tamได้ dâiเพียง piangปล่อยเบลอ bplàwy bloeแต่ dtàeสุดท้าย sùt-táaiก็ gâwยัง yangคิดถึง kít-tǔengเธอ toe
All I can do is let it blur, but in the end I still miss you.
ทำได้เพียงtam dâi piang + verb = all I can do is…: เพียงpiang = only, the written and sung twin of แค่kâe, so in speech it's ทำได้แค่รอtam dâi kâe raw = all I can do is wait. ปล่อยเบลอbplàwy bloe is slang, literally 'to let it go blurry': to stop thinking about something and let it slide (ปล่อยbplàwy = to let go; เบลอbloe, from English 'blur', = blurry, dazed). สุดท้ายsùt-táai = in the end; ก็ยังgâw yang + verb = still, after all that. - ก็ gâwลืม luuemไป bpaiว่า wâaลืม luuemยังไง yang-ngaiยังคง yang-kongคิดถึง kít-tǔengเธอ toeอยู่ yùuอย่างนี้ yàang níi
I've forgotten how to forget; I still miss you, like this.
Nearly the title, ลืมไปแล้วว่าลืมยังไงluuem bpai láew wâa luuem yang-ngai. ลืมluuem = to forget, and ไปbpai after it says the thing is gone: ลืมไปluuem bpai = to have forgotten. ว่าwâa (that) before a question word turns it into 'how', 'what' or 'whether' inside a sentence: ลืมว่าลืมยังไงluuem wâa luuem yang-ngai = to forget how to forget, ไม่รู้ว่าใครmâi rúu wâa krai = I don't know who. ยังคงyang-kong = still, a fuller ยังyang; verb + อยู่yùu = still …-ing; อย่างนี้yàang níi = like this. - ต้อง dtâwngใช้ cháiน้ำตา náam-dtaaเท่าไร tâo-raiลบ lópภาพ pâapเธอ toeใน naiใจ jai
How many tears will it take to erase you from my heart?
ต้องใช้dtâwng chái + thing + เท่าไรtâo-rai = how much … does it take: ต้องใช้เวลาเท่าไรdtâwng chái wee-laa tâo-rai = how long does it take? เท่าไรtâo-rai is the written form of เท่าไหร่tâo-rài. น้ำตาnáam-dtaa = tears, literally 'eye water'. ลบlóp = to erase, to delete: the Delete button on a Thai phone says ลบlóp, and ลบภาพlóp pâap = to delete a picture. His picture to delete is ภาพเธอในใจpâap toe nai jai, the picture of you in my heart. - ทุก túkวัน wanทำ tamได้ dâiเพียง piangนั่ง nângมอง mawngนาฬิกา naa-lí-gaa
Every day, all I can do is sit and watch the clock.
ทุกวันtúk wan = every day. ทำได้เพียงtam dâi piang again: all I can do is. Thai strings verbs together with no 'and': นั่งมองnâng mawng = to sit and watch, นั่งรอnâng raw = to sit and wait. มองmawng = to look at, to gaze. นาฬิกาnaa-lí-gaa = a clock or a watch, and also 'o'clock' in the 24-hour time of timetables: เก้านาฬิกาgâao naa-lí-gaa = 9:00. - ก็ gâwเพิ่ง pôengได้ dâiรู้ rúuว่า wâaวัน wanนึง nuengเพียง piangแค่ kâeความ kwaamคิดถึง kít-tǔengก็ gâwทรมาน taw-rá-maan
Only now do I know that one day, just missing you can be torture.
เพิ่งpôeng + verb = only just, only now: เพิ่งมาถึงpôeng maa tǔeng = I've only just arrived. ได้รู้dâi rúu = to come to know, to find out. วันนึงwan nueng = one day (นึงnueng is how หนึ่งnùeng, one, sounds after a counting word). เพียงแค่piang kâe = merely, nothing but: two words for 'only' together. ความkwaam turns a verb into a noun: ความคิดถึงkwaam kít-tǔeng = missing someone, longing. ทรมานtaw-rá-maan = to suffer, to be torture.

Grammar in this song
All I can do is: ทำได้แค่tam dâi kâe + verb. In songs and writing, ทำได้เพียงtam dâi piang: ทำได้เพียงนั่งมองนาฬิกาtam dâi piang nâng mawng naa-lí-gaa (all I can do is sit and watch the clock). In speech: ทำได้แค่รอtam dâi kâe raw (all I can do is wait), ทำได้แค่นี้tam dâi kâe níi (this is all I can do).
It's me who…: เป็นbpen + person + ที่tîi. Thai puts the person in front to stress who did it: เป็นฉันที่ไม่ไปไหนbpen chǎn tîi mâi bpai nǎi (I'm the one who hasn't gone anywhere), เป็นเขาที่โทรมาbpen kǎo tîi too maa (he's the one who called).
How much does it take: ต้องใช้dtâwng chái + noun + เท่าไหร่tâo-rài. ต้องใช้เงินเท่าไหร่dtâwng chái ngoen tâo-rài (how much money does it take?), ต้องใช้เวลานานแค่ไหนdtâwng chái wee-laa naan kâe-nǎi (how long does it take?).
The culture behind it
Jeff Satur (Worakamol Satur, born in Bangkok in 1995) released "ลืมไปแล้วว่าลืมยังไงluuem bpai láew wâa luuem yang-ngai" (Fade) in September 2022, a few months after the series KinnPorsche had made him famous across Asia, with an English version on the same day. He wrote the melody and, with the lyricist Pluviophile, the words; Mac Sarun produced it, with Soh ETC on the music. Its idea, in the words of the video's description: we don't remember how we forgot someone, and when we want to forget, we have already forgotten how. Within a month it was number one on JOOX's Thailand Top 100, for two weeks running (Sanook, October 2022).
The video, in which Jeff himself stars, follows the same two lovers through different eras, as if from one life to the next. That is a very Thai way to talk about love: love songs promise to love someone ทุกภพทุกชาติtúk póp túk châat, 'in every life', from the Buddhist belief in rebirth. The chorus also slips into old poetic Thai to talk to his own heart, with ไยyai, a poetic 'why', and เจ้าjâo, an old word for 'you'.
