- ได้ dâiมา maaพ้อ páwน้อง náwngแก้มอ่องต่อง gâem àwng-dtàwngใน naiวัน wanสงกรานต์ sǒng-graan
I met you, my girl with the glowing cheeks, at Songkran.
Isan → Central: พ้อpáw = พบpóp or เจอjoe, to meet. ได้มาพ้อdâi maa páw = I got to meet: ได้dâi before a verb = got to, had the chance to. A man calls his girlfriend น้องnáwng, 'the younger one', and himself อ้ายâai, 'older brother'. Isan อ่องต่องàwng-dtàwng describes bright, glowing cheeks (แก้มgâem = cheek). วันสงกรานต์wan sǒng-graan = Songkran day, the Thai New Year in April. - ก่อน gàwnกระเจียว grà-jiawบาน baanบ่ต้องย่าน bàw dtâwng yâanสิ sìกลับ glàpมา maaหา hǎa
'Before the Siam tulips bloom, don't worry, I'll come back to you.'
Her promise, as he remembers it. ก่อนgàwn + a clause = before: ก่อนกระเจียวบานgàwn grà-jiaw baan = before the Siam tulips bloom. Isan ย่านyâan = กลัวglua, to be afraid (in Bangkok ย่านyâan is a part of town), so บ่ต้องย่านbàw dtâwng yâan = ไม่ต้องกลัวmâi dtâwng glua, don't be afraid, don't worry. สิsì = จะjà, will. กลับมาหาglàp maa hǎa = to come back to see someone. - อ้าย âaiบ่ bàwฮู้ húuว่า wâaจริง jingหรือ rǔueหยอก yàwk
I don't know if you meant it or were only teasing.
Isan → Central: บ่ฮู้bàw húu = ไม่รู้mâi rúu, I don't know (Isan has h where Central Thai has r). ว่าwâa = whether, that. X หรือrǔue Y = X or Y: จริงหรือหยอกjing rǔue yàwk = true or teasing, a set phrase. หยอกyàwk = to tease, to joke, Central Thai too: หยอกเล่นyàwk lên = to tease for fun. - ดอก dàwkกระเจียว grà-jiawบาน baanอีก ìikไม่ mâiนาน naanก็ gâwคง kongสิ sìเฉา chǎo
The Siam tulips are blooming; before long they'll wilt.
The hook. ดอกdàwk = flower, the word in front of a flower's name (ดอกกระเจียวdàwk grà-jiaw, the Siam tulip); it is also the counting word for flowers. บานbaan = to bloom, to open. อีกไม่นานìik mâi naan = before long, literally 'not long more'. คงkong (probably) and Isan สิsì (will) together: คงสิเฉาkong sì chǎo = will probably wilt. เฉาchǎo = to wilt, to droop, and เหี่ยวเฉาhìaw-chǎo = withered. - อ้าย âaiก็ gâwรอ rawเจ้า jâoอยู่ yùuคือเก่า kuue gào
I'm still waiting for you, just the same.
รอraw + someone + อยู่yùu = to be waiting for them. Isan คือเก่าkuue gào = เหมือนเดิมmǔean-doem, the same as before: in Isan คือkuue means 'like', and เก่าgào is 'old'. เจ้าjâo = you, to a loved one. ก็gâw = even so. The line goes on without a breath to ask whose girl she has become. - ดอก dàwkกระเจียว grà-jiawบาน baanผ่าน pàanหน้าแล้ง nâa-láengเจ้า jâoไป bpaiอยู่ yùuไส sǎi
The Siam tulips are blooming. The dry season is over; where have you gone?
The seasons tell the story: หน้าแล้งnâa-láeng = the dry season, the months without rain; หน้าฝนnâa-fǒn = the rainy season, when the Siam tulips bloom; หน้าหนาวnâa-nǎao = the cool season. ผ่านpàan = to pass, to go by. Isan ไสsǎi = ไหนnǎi, where: ไปอยู่ไสbpai yùu sǎi = ไปอยู่ไหนbpai yùu nǎi, where have you gone (to live)? - เข้า kâoหน้าฝน nâa-fǒnบ่โดน bàw doonเท่าไหร่ tâo-rài
The rainy season has barely begun…
Isan โดนdoon (or ดนdon) = นานnaan, a long time, so บ่โดนbàw doon = ไม่นานmâi naan, not long; in Bangkok โดนdoon means to get hit. After a 'not', เท่าไหร่tâo-rài softens it to 'not very': บ่โดนเท่าไหร่bàw doon tâo-rài = not very long. เข้าหน้าฝนkâo nâa-fǒn = to enter the rainy season. The next line says his tears are already streaming.

Grammar in this song
Isan words, Central Thai grammar. Nearly every line keeps Central Thai word order and swaps a few words. บ่bàw = ไม่mâi (not), สิsì = จะjà (will), ฮู้húu = รู้rúu (to know: Isan h for Central r), ไสsǎi = ไหนnǎi (where), พ้อpáw = พบpóp (to meet). Some Isan words look like Central Thai ones with another meaning: ย่านyâan is 'afraid', not a part of town, and โดนdoon is 'a long time', not 'to get hit'. The romanization reads these words as their spelling would sound in Central Thai; real Isan tones differ, so copy the singer.
Before, before long, not very. ก่อนgàwn + a clause = before something happens: ก่อนกระเจียวบานgàwn grà-jiaw baan (before the Siam tulips bloom), ก่อนฝนตกgàwn fǒn dtòk (before it rains). อีกไม่นานìik mâi naan = before long, in a while: อีกไม่นานก็ถึงìik mâi naan gâw tǔeng (we'll be there soon). And a negative + เท่าไหร่tâo-rài = not very: ไม่แพงเท่าไหร่mâi paeng tâo-rài (not very expensive), บ่โดนเท่าไหร่bàw doon tâo-rài (not very long).
The culture behind it
Kong Huayrai (ก้องห้วยไร่gâwng hûay-râi) was born Akkharadet Yodjampa in 1987 in Wanon Niwat district, Sakon Nakhon, and took his stage name from his home village, Ban Huay Rai. His Isan love song Khu Khong is also on our songs page. 'Dok Krachiao Ban' came out on 15 December 2025 as his first single with the label GeneLab, launched with a รถแห่rót-hàe (a parade truck loaded with speakers) around Bangkok's Asok and a live show in Chulalongkorn University's Centenary Park. TrueID reported a million views in 17 hours; the video, directed by Tongtae Thiti Srinuan, stars the actress Bella Ranee Campen. He wrote the words with the producer Bank Ratthawit Anantpornsiri, who also worked on F.HERO's Kularb. In 2026 the song topped Billboard Thailand's Thai songs chart in January, and by June it had spent 27 weeks at number one on Billboard Thailand's country chart.
The story starts at สงกรานต์sǒng-graan, the Thai New Year in April, when people who work far away go home, and at the วันไหลwan-lǎi festivities that follow it. Two nights later she goes back to work, promising to return before the ดอกกระเจียวdàwk grà-jiaw bloom. The Siam tulip, a wild relative of turmeric, covers forest fields with pink and purple at the start of the rainy season: in Chaiyaphum's Pa Hin Ngam and Sai Thong national parks the fields bloom from June to August. So she had about three months. The flowers come, and wilt, and she doesn't.
