What the song is about

แค่เพื่อนมั้งkâe pûean máng, “Just Friend? (Kae Puean Mang)”, is a T-pop song by Nanon Korapat (2021). A song from Bad Buddy (2021), the GMMTV series about the sons of two feuding neighbours, an engineering student and an architecture student, who fall for each other, sung by one of its two stars. A breezy city-pop song about the oldest question there is: are we just friends, or more? Its lines are everyday B1 Thai: I guess, what does it mean, more than, if… then don't…, should I, to back off, and part of me wants to message you first.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

It's probably nothing, the way you look at me like that.

The title's word: มั้งmáng at the end of a sentence = I guess, probably, when you aren't sure: ฝนจะตกมั้งfǒn jà dtòk máng = it's going to rain, I think. ไม่มีอะไรmâi mii à-rai = nothing, it's nothing. มองมาmawng maa = to look over (at me): มาmaa after a verb points towards the speaker. อย่างนั้นyàang nán = like that.
  2. ที่ tîiเธอ toeทำ tamลงไป long bpaiมัน manต้อง dtâwngแปลว่า bplae wâaไง ngai

What you did, what is it supposed to mean?

ที่เธอทำลงไปtîi toe tam long bpai = what you did: ลงไปlong bpai after ทำtam stresses that it's done. แปลว่าbplae wâa = to mean: คำนี้แปลว่าอะไรkam níi bplae wâa à-rai = what does this word mean? ไงngai is the short ยังไงyang-ngai, how: แปลว่าไงbplae wâa ngai = what does it mean? มันต้องman dtâwng = is it supposed to: มันman (it) is the whole situation.

Just friends, or more than that?

The hook. แค่kâe = just, only, and หรือrǔue = or. มากกว่านั้นmâak gwàa nán = more than that: กว่าgwàa makes comparisons, ดีกว่าdii gwàa = better, แพงกว่าpaeng gwàa = more expensive. The series' Thai title, แค่เพื่อนครับเพื่อนkâe pûean kráp pûean, 'just friends, my friend', answers the same question with a wink.

If you don't feel that way about me, then don't do anything that makes me think so.

ถ้าtâa… ก็gâw… = if… then…: ถ้าไม่ชอบก็ไม่ต้องกินtâa mâi châwp gâw mâi dtâwng gin = if you don't like it, you don't have to eat it. คิดกับkít gàp someone = to have feelings for them: คิดอะไรกับฉันไหมkít à-rai gàp chǎn mǎi = do you have feelings for me? อย่าyàa + verb = don't. ที่ฉันต้องคิดtîi chǎn dtâwng kít = that makes me (have to) think. แบบนั้นbàep nán = like that, that way.

Should I back off, or should I move closer to you?

ควรkuan = should, ought to: ควรจะไปkuan jà bpai = I should go; ไม่ควรmâi kuan = shouldn't. ควรจะต้องkuan jà dtâwng stacks should and must: should I really. ถอยtǎwy = to move back, to back off; a car backs up too: ถอยรถtǎwy rót. เข้าไปใกล้kâo bpai glâi = to move in close: เข้าไปkâo bpai = in, away from me, and ใกล้glâi = near.

Part of me wants to message you, the other part holds me back.

ใจหนึ่งjai nùeng… อีกใจìik jai… = one part of my heart…, the other part…: where English says 'part of me', Thai splits the heart in two. ทักták = to message someone first (literally, to greet): ทักไปก่อนták bpai gàwn = text them first. ห้ามhâam = to forbid, to stop (someone): ห้ามสูบบุหรี่hâam sùup bù-rìi = no smoking. เอาไว้ao wái after a verb = and keep it that way: ห้ามเอาไว้hâam ao wái = holds (me) back.

Grammar in this song

Unsure endings: มั้งmáng. Put it at the end of a sentence when you're guessing: เขาไม่มามั้งkǎo mâi maa máng = he's not coming, I guess. It's casual; to sound more careful, say คงkong (probably) before the verb: เขาคงไม่มาkǎo kong mâi maa.

If… then…: ถ้าtâa… ก็gâw… The condition comes first with ถ้าtâa, and ก็gâw opens the result: ถ้าว่างก็มานะtâa wâang gâw maa ná = if you're free, come over. A request or a warning can follow: ถ้าไม่รักก็อย่าทำให้รักtâa mâi rák gâw yàa tam-hâi rák = if you don't love me, don't make me love you.

Should: ควรkuan. It goes before the verb and gives advice: ควรพักผ่อนkuan pák-pàwn = you should rest; ไม่ควรmâi kuan = shouldn't. To ask for advice: ควรทำยังไงดีkuan tam yang-ngai dii = what should I do?

The culture behind it

Bad Buddy (แค่เพื่อนครับเพื่อนkâe pûean kráp pûean, 2021), made by GMMTV and directed by Aof Noppharnach, is based on the novel Behind the Scenes by afterday and -west-. Pat (Ohm Pawat) and Pran (Nanon Korapat) grew up next door to each other, sons of two families with rival hardware shops whose fathers can't stand each other; at university one leads the engineering freshmen, the other the architecture freshmen, two faculties with an old rivalry of their own. It premiered on GMM25 on 29 October 2021, and one critic called it a boys' love Romeo and Juliet.

Nanon, who plays Pran, sings this song himself. He said it's about secretly loving a friend: the friend's kindness makes you feel good, but the friend may not mean anything by it. It was his first song about a friend, in the city-pop style he likes, and he asked to record it a second time because the first take didn't have the feeling he wanted. The words and melody are by Achariya Dulyapaiboon, who also wrote NuNew's "True Love" and Bright's "Kan Goo" for 2gether. The video passed six million views in its first two months.
