What the song is about

ขาดเธอขาดใจkàat toe kàat-jai, “Without You I'd Die (Khat Thoe Khat Jai)”, is a T-pop song by Nat Chatchai (2016). The ending theme of Nakee (2016), Channel 3's fantasy drama about a naga and a love that lasts across lifetimes, the highest-rated Thai drama of its year. A man begs heaven itself not to take the woman he loves. Its title is a play on one word, to lack, to snap: without her his heart would snap, and he would die. The lines teach strong everyday words: to lack, to search, a long time, don't, to take away, important.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. หาก hàakขาด kàatเธอ toeตัว dtuaฉัน chǎnคง kongขาดใจ kàat-jai

Without her, I would surely die.

The title, twice over. ขาดkàat = to lack, to be without: ขาดเธอkàat toe = (to be) without her. ขาดใจkàat-jai = to die, literally "the heart snaps", as a thread snaps (ขาดkàat also means to snap, to tear). หากhàak = if, the written ถ้าtâa. คงkong = probably, surely. ตัวฉันdtua chǎn = I myself (a tap on ตัวdtua alone shows its other jobs); men sing ฉันchǎn too. Here เธอtoe is "she": he talks about the woman he loves, and in the chorus he speaks to heaven itself. In most love songs เธอtoe is "you".
  2. เธอ toeคือ kuueรัก rákที่ tîiใจ jaiค้นหา kón-hǎaมา maaนาน naan

She's the love my heart has searched for so long.

คือkuue = is, when you say who or what someone is: เธอคือรักtoe kuue rák = she is (my) love; here รักrák is a noun, love. ค้นหาkón-hǎa = to search for (ค้นkón = to search through + หาhǎa = to look for); a search box online says ค้นหาkón-hǎa too. Verb + มานานmaa naan = have been doing for a long time: รอมานานraw maa naan = I've waited a long time. The rest of this part turns to fate.
  3. อย่า yàaพราก prâakเธอ toeไป bpaiจาก jàakฉัน chǎn

Don't take her away from me.

The chorus, a plea to heaven, ฟ้าfáa (the sky). อย่าyàa + verb = don't: อย่าไปyàa bpai = don't go. พรากprâak = to part people who love each other, to take someone away from someone: พรากลูกจากแม่prâak lûuk jàak mâe = to take a child from its mother. ไปจากbpai jàak = away from: ไปbpai after a verb points away from the speaker.
  4. ก็ gâwเธอ toeนั้น nánสำคัญ sǎm-kanกับ gàpหัวใจ hǔa-jai

Because she means so much to my heart.

Before it he pleads for the two of them. ก็gâw at the start of a sentence = well, after all, giving a reason: ก็ฉันรักเธอgâw chǎn rák toe = well, (it's because) I love you. นั้นnán after a word points at it, "her, that one". สำคัญsǎm-kan = important; สำคัญกับsǎm-kan gàp + someone = important to: เธอสำคัญกับฉันมากtoe sǎm-kan gàp chǎn mâak = you mean a lot to me. หัวใจhǔa-jai = heart.

Grammar in this song

One verb, many jobs: ขาดkàat. ขาดkàat is to lack, to be without, to be missing: ขาดเงินkàat ngoen = to be short of money, ขาดเรียนkàat rian = to miss class. It's also what a rope or a thread does when it snaps: เชือกขาดchûeak kàat = the rope snapped. The title joins both: ขาดเธอขาดใจkàat toe kàat jai, without her (my) heart snaps.

Don't: อย่าyàa + verb. อย่าyàa goes before the verb: อย่าลืมyàa luuem = don't forget. Add นะná to soften it, อย่าลืมนะyàa luuem ná, or เลยloei to plead, as songs do: อย่าไปเลยyàa bpai loei = please don't go.

Have been doing for…: verb + มาmaa + time. มาmaa after a verb brings the action up to now: ค้นหามานานkón-hǎa maa naan = have been searching for a long time, เรียนภาษาไทยมาสองปีrian paa-sǎa tai maa sǎwng bpii = have been learning Thai for two years.

The culture behind it

Nakee (นาคีnaa-kii), Channel 3's fantasy drama from the novel by Tri Aphirum, made by Act Art Generation and directed by Pongpat Wachirabanjong, aired from 26 September to 5 December 2016, with Natapohn "Taew" Tameeruks as Nakee, a naga (the sacred serpent of Mekong legend), and Phupoom "Ken" Pongpanupak as a man whose love for her goes back to a past life. It had the highest ratings of any Thai drama that year (its finale scored 17.3 nationwide) and won the Nataraja Award for best drama. Its characters speak Isan all through, in the Ubon accent, known as a gentle one: the scriptwriter hoped viewers would come to hear Isan as modern, not as the mark of someone from the provinces.

This was the drama's ending theme (for its first ten episodes), words by Thadakorn and music by Poramet Muansanit, sung by Nat Chatchai (Chatchai Manitayakul), the voice of the band Crescendo from 2008 to 2013 (and again since 2024), who had already sung a theme for another Channel 3 drama. The opening theme, Kong Huayrai's Isan song "Khu Khong", is in this library too.
