NuNewนุนิว ชวรินทร์

What the song is about

เปลี่ยนbplìan, “Change (Plian)”, is a T-pop song by NuNew (2022). The song NuNew sings in Cutie Pie (2022) when his character, Kuea, steps on stage as the secret singer Kirin and stops pretending: a cover of a 2000s song by the Chiang Mai band ETC. A hurt, honest song about changing yourself for someone who never changes, and deciding to change your heart instead. Its lines teach however much, still the same, the real reason, or not?, to fall out of love, to change your mind, easier and tell me straight.

If you've fallen out of love…

ถ้าหากว่าtâa hàak wâa = if, longer and more emphatic than ถ้าtâa. หมดmòt = to run out, to be all gone: หมดแล้วmòt láew = it's all gone, sold out; เงินหมดngoen mòt = out of money. หมดรักmòt rák = to have no love left, to fall out of love.

Grammar in this song

However much: verb + เท่าไรtâo-rai … ก็gâw. The first half says how much, the second half (after ก็gâw) says it makes no difference: เปลี่ยนตัวเองเท่าไรเธอก็เหมือนเดิมbplìan dtua-eeng tâo-rai toe gâw mǔean-doem; รอเท่าไรก็ไม่มาraw tâo-rai gâw mâi maa = however long I wait, he doesn't come.

Or not?: หรือเปล่าrǔue bplàao. Put it after a statement to ask yes or no: เหนื่อยหรือเปล่าnùeay rǔue bplàao = are you tired? In quick speech and in songs it shrinks to รึเปล่าrúe bplàao, and in chats to ป่ะbpà.

Switching: เปลี่ยนbplìan. เปลี่ยนใจbplìan jai = to change your mind; เปลี่ยนไปbplìan bpai + verb = to switch to; เปลี่ยนรถbplìan rót = to change buses or trains.

The culture behind it

Cutie Pie (นิ่งเฮียก็หาว่าซื่อnîng hia gâw hǎa wâa sûue, 2022), directed by Kittipat Champa from BamBam's novel, set off what the Thai press called the Zee-NuNew fever. Lian (Zee Pruk) and Kuea (NuNew) have been engaged since childhood because of a promise between their grandparents. To please Lian, Kuea plays the polite, well-behaved fiancé, while he secretly studies automotive engineering, loves motorbikes and, every Thursday night, sings and plays the drums at the Gemini Club as Kirin. When Lian tells him that he doesn't love him, Kuea calls off the engagement, and in episode 2 he shows the club who Kirin really is, singing this song. The series aired on Workpoint TV from February to May 2022.

"เปลี่ยนbplìan" is a cover: it is the title song of the second album of ETC., released in the mid-2000s. ETC. is a band formed by music students of Payap University in Chiang Mai, and the band credits its words and music to Mac Sarun. NuNew went on to sing True Love, which won the Nataraja Award for best drama song.
