OG-ANIC x LAZYLOXY
What the song is about
เป็นไรไหมbpen rai mǎi, “Pen Rai Mai? (Are You OK?)”, is a Thai rap song by OG-ANIC x LAZYLOXY (2018). The hook is full of patterns you will use (even if, one day you'll have to, now it's time to), and the verses teach out of the blue, never mind, being alone is sometimes good, and tell me, I'll listen. With some 388 million views, it is one of the 25 most-watched music videos by Thai artists on YouTube.

- ถึงแม้ว่า tǔeng máe wâaจะ jàไม่ mâiรู้ rúuว่า wâaเธอ toeนั้น nánเป็นไรไหม bpen rai mǎi
even if he doesn't know whether you're OK,
The hook: even if he never asks where you are now, even if he doesn't know whether you're OK… ถึงแม้ว่าtǔeng máe wâa = even if, even though; shorter forms are ถึงแม้tǔeng máe, แม้ว่าmáe wâa and just ถึงtǔeng. ไม่รู้ว่าmâi rúu wâa = not know whether, not know that. เธอนั้นtoe nán = you there: นั้นnán (that) after a word gives it weight. He sings ว่าเธอwâa toe so fast that the two words blend into one beat. เป็นไรไหมbpen rai mǎi, the title, = are you OK?, is something wrong?: เป็นไรbpen rai is the spoken short form of เป็นอะไรbpen à-rai (what's wrong?), as in ไม่เป็นไรmâi bpen rai (it's nothing, never mind). - แต่ dtàeสักวัน sàk wanต้อง dtâwngตัดใจ dtàt-jai
but one day you'll have to let him go.
สักวันsàk wan = one day, some day. ต้องdtâwng + verb = must, will have to. ตัดใจdtàt-jai, 'cut the heart', = to let go, to give up on someone or something you want: ตัดใจไม่ได้dtàt-jai mâi dâi = I can't let go, ตัดใจซะdtàt-jai sá = just let it go. - รัก rákกัน ganเหลือเกิน lǔea-goenแต่ dtàeถึง tǔengเวลา wee-laaต้อง dtâwngจากกัน jàak gan
You love each other so much, but now it's time to part.
รักกันrák gan = to love each other (กันgan after a verb = each other). เหลือเกินlǔea-goen = so very, terribly, a word of feelings and songs. ถึงเวลาtǔeng wee-laa = it's time, literally 'reach the time': ถึงเวลากินข้าวtǔeng wee-laa gin kâao = it's time to eat. จากกันjàak gan = to part from each other. - เธอ toeเป็น bpenGood gúutGirl goenแต่ dtàeเขา kǎoไม่ใช่ mâi châiGood gúutGuy gaai
You're a good girl, but he's not a good guy.
LAZYLOXY's verse. To say what someone is, Thai uses เป็นbpen + noun: เธอเป็นครูtoe bpen kruu = she's a teacher. The negative is not ไม่เป็นmâi bpen but ไม่ใช่mâi châi + noun: เขาไม่ใช่ครูkǎo mâi châi kruu = he isn't a teacher. With an adjective there's no 'be' at all: เขาใจร้ายkǎo jai-ráai = he's mean. The verse goes on: however much you love him, however drunk you get, he still says goodbye. - อยู่ดีๆ yùu dii-diiเขา kǎoก็ gâwหาย hǎai
Out of the blue, he's gone.
OG-ANIC's verse. อยู่ดีๆyùu dii-dii, 'being fine, fine', = suddenly, out of the blue, for no reason: อยู่ดีๆฝนก็ตกyùu dii-dii fǒn gâw dtòk = out of nowhere it started to rain. A sentence with it usually has ก็gâw before the verb. หายhǎai = to disappear, to be gone, and also to get better: หายป่วยhǎai bpùay = to recover. He goes on: don't fret, crying and whining gets you nothing. - อยู่ yùuคนเดียว kon-diawบางที baang-tiiก็ gâwดี dii
Being on your own is good sometimes.
อยู่คนเดียวyùu kon-diaw = to be on your own, to live alone. บางทีbaang-tii = sometimes (and maybe). ก็ดีgâw dii = is good too, isn't bad: แบบนี้ก็ดีbàep níi gâw dii = this is fine too. Then his advice gets less wise: sip some wine, chill, and come and party tonight. - ช่างเหอะ châang hòeอย่า yàaไป bpaiสนใจ sǒn-jai
Forget it, don't give it a thought.
ช่างเหอะchâang hòe = forget it, never mind: ช่างchâang (let it be) + เหอะhòe, the casual sound of เถอะtòe (go on). ช่างมันchâang man means the same. อย่าไปyàa bpai + verb = don't go and…, and สนใจsǒn-jai = to be interested in, to pay attention to: อย่าไปสนใจyàa bpai sǒn-jai = don't pay it any attention. - เธอ toeพูด pûutมา maaฉัน chǎnจะ jàรับฟัง ráp-fang
You tell me, I'll listen.
Just before, he asks her to let out whatever is on her mind. เธอพูดมาtoe pûut maa = you say it (to me): มาmaa after a verb points it at the speaker, as in ส่งมาsòng maa = send it over. รับฟังráp-fang = to listen to someone, to hear them out (รับráp = to receive, ฟังfang = to listen). Men sing ฉันchǎn (I) too: in songs it is everyone's 'I'.

Grammar in this song
Even if: ถึงแม้ว่าtǔeng máe wâa (or แม้ว่าmáe wâa, ถึงtǔeng) + what might happen, then ก็gâw or แต่dtàe + what happens anyway: ถึงเขาไม่โทรมาฉันก็ไม่เป็นไรtǔeng kǎo mâi too maa chǎn gâw mâi bpen rai (even if he doesn't call, I'm fine), ถึงแม้ว่าฝนตกฉันก็จะไปtǔeng máe wâa fǒn dtòk chǎn gâw jà bpai (even if it rains, I'll go).
เป็นbpen + noun, ไม่ใช่mâi châi + noun: เธอเป็นครูtoe bpen kruu (she's a teacher), เขาไม่ใช่ครูkǎo mâi châi kruu (he isn't a teacher). Adjectives need neither: เขาใจร้ายkǎo jai-ráai (he's mean).
อยู่ดีๆyùu dii-dii … ก็gâw + verb = out of the blue, … : อยู่ดีๆเขาก็หายyùu dii-dii kǎo gâw hǎai (out of nowhere, he was gone).
The culture behind it
OG-ANIC (Big, Phuwadit Silaudomdet) and LAZYLOXY (Top, Pathomphop Poonklan) both came from the TV contest The Rapper, OG-ANIC on UrboyTJ's team and LAZYLOXY on Twopee's. "เป็นไรไหมbpen rai mǎi" came out on 12 September 2018, produced by NINO, who co-produced Thon, with support from YUPP!, the hip-hop label of Phak Kon; it passed a million views in a day (Sanook). In the video the two play bartenders looking after a customer with a broken heart, until she feels a little better. With some 388 million views it ranks 23rd among the music videos of Thai artists on YouTube (kworb.net).
The song is set where many Thai heartbreak songs are: in a bar. The hook tells her that however drunk she gets (เมาmao, drunk), she has to make it home; OG-ANIC's verse invites her to drink to forget and party with him, and the closing lines bring an English swear word and hints at taking her home to bed. That is why the song is marked explicit, on Spotify too; the lines here are clean.
