Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. ตอบ dtàwpคำถาม kam-tǎamตัวเอง dtua-eengไม่ mâiได้ dâiเลย loei

I can't answer my own question at all,

The song's first words. ตอบdtàwp = to answer, and คำถามkam-tǎam = a question (ถามtǎam = to ask, คำkam = word). ตัวเองdtua-eeng = oneself: คำถามตัวเองkam-tǎam dtua-eeng = my own question. Verb + ไม่ได้mâi dâi = can't: ตอบไม่ได้dtàwp mâi dâi = can't answer, and เลยloei after it = at all. The question is about what she really wants.
  2. ไม่ mâiอยาก yàakหลงทาง lǒng taangอย่างนี้ yàang níi

I don't want to be lost like this.

The last line before the chorus. หลงทางlǒng taang = to get lost, to lose your way, a word worth knowing on any trip: หลงทางแล้วlǒng taang láew = I'm lost. Here she's lost in love, not in the street. ไม่อยากmâi yàak + verb = don't want to. อย่างนี้yàang níi = like this; in casual talk, แบบนี้bàep níi.
  3. ฉัน chǎnไม่ mâiเคย koeiจะ jàรู้ rúuหัวใจ hǔa-jaiตัวเอง dtua-eeng

I never know my own heart.

The chorus starts with the title's words: รู้หัวใจตัวเองrúu hǔa-jai dtua-eeng = to know your own heart. ไม่เคยmâi koei + verb = never: ไม่เคยกินmâi koei gin = I've never eaten it. ไม่เคยจะmâi koei jà + verb is a little stronger, never even: ไม่เคยจะฟังmâi koei jà fang = never even listens. หัวใจhǔa-jai = heart, and one that is ตัวเองdtua-eeng is your own.
  4. อยากรู้ yàak rúuว่า wâaเธอ toeคือ kuueใคร krai

I want to know who you are.

The end of the chorus. Before it she weighs two people against each other: the drama is a love triangle. อยากรู้yàak rúu = to want to know, curious: อยากรู้ว่าyàak rúu wâa + a question = I want to know… คือkuue = is, when you say who or what something is: นี่คืออะไรnîi kuue à-rai = what is this? ใครkrai = who.
  5. อยาก yàakจะ jàรัก rákใคร kraiเป็น bpenเพียง piangสักคน sàk kon

I want to love someone, just one person.

The second verse. อยากจะyàak jà + verb = to want to (the จะjà is optional). ใครkrai, who, also means someone: มีใครอยู่ไหมmii krai yùu mǎi = is anyone there? สักคนsàk kon = just one person, anyone at all: สักsàk + a counting word = just one, some, as in สักวันsàk wan = some day. เป็นเพียงbpen piang = only, just. The next line wonders who that one person will be.

Grammar in this song

Can't: verb + ไม่ได้mâi dâi. ได้dâi after a verb says you can, ไม่ได้mâi dâi that you can't: ตอบไม่ได้dtàwp mâi dâi = can't answer, ไปไม่ได้bpai mâi dâi = can't go. Add เลยloei for "at all": จำไม่ได้เลยjam mâi dâi loei = I can't remember at all.

Never: ไม่เคยmâi koei + verb. เคยkoei = have ever, so ไม่เคยmâi koei = never: ไม่เคยไปเชียงใหม่mâi koei bpai chiang-mài = I've never been to Chiang Mai.

Question words as "some-" and "any-". In a statement, ใครkrai (who) means someone or anyone, and อะไรà-rai (what) means something: อยากกินอะไรyàak gin à-rai can be "what do you feel like eating?" or "I feel like eating something", and the tone of voice tells you which. With สักsàk + a counting word it's "just one": ใครสักคนkrai sàk kon = someone, anyone at all.

The culture behind it

Ab Ruk Online (แอบรักออนไลน์àep rák awn-laai, "secret love online"), a Channel 3 romantic comedy from a novel by Romkaew, made by Ann Thongprasom's company Thong Entertainment, aired from 7 January to 25 February 2015. Ann plays Awatsaya, a fearsome boss who falls for Pranon (Prin Suparat), a new man on her staff, and to keep her image as the boss she woos him in an online chat under a made-up name, คุณแอบรักkun àep rák, "Ms. Secret Love". The company's handsome, sly managing director (Peter Corp Dyrendal) finds out, helps her, and falls for her himself. Hence the song's question: which of them does her heart want?

It was the first drama song for Violette Wautier, a Thai-Belgian singer born in Japan who became known on The Voice Thailand in 2013. Words by Narongwit Techatanawat, music by Nawakomet Kriangkrai; it came out on 1 January 2015 and its video on 12 January. It reached number one on several Bangkok radio charts and was nominated for best drama song at the 7th Nataraja Awards. Violette also sings the woman's side of GAVIN:D's "Jealous", which is in this library too.
