The culture behind it

Whatcharawalee (วัชราวลีwát-chá-raa-wá-lii) is a three-piece band led by singer and songwriter Pam (Monchai Sattayathep), with guitarist Milk and drummer Joob, all graduates of Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University in Bangkok. "ลูกอมlûuk-om" began as a gift: in 2009 the band wrote and recorded it as a surprise for the bride at the wedding of a friend who had played keyboards in the band, and put it on YouTube after the wedding; this upload is dated 31 October 2009. The bride's nickname was ลูกอมlûuk-om, 'candy', and her real name, วัชราวลีwát-chá-raa-wá-lii, became the band's name once people started asking who had made the song (Kapook, 2011). Many singers have covered it since, and in October 2026 it had spent 232 weeks on Spotify's weekly chart for Thailand (kworb).

Nearly every Thai has a nickname, ชื่อเล่นchûue-lên, used far more than their long official name: fruit, sweets and English words are all common nicknames, like ลูกอมlûuk-om (candy), ส้มsôm (orange) or บีมbiim (Beam). Friends often don't know each other's full names.
