Yellow curry in Thai

“Yellow curry” in Thai is แกงกะหรี่gaeng-gà-rìi.

แกงกะหรี่ gaeng-gà-rìi

yellow curry (mild, Indian-style) noun

  • gaeng mid
  • gà low
  • rìi low
  • Low: flat and lower than your normal voice, dropping a little at the end.

How to use it

The mildest Thai curry: coconut milk with turmeric and curry powder, potatoes and onions, usually with chicken. Order it when you can't take the heat. Say the whole name, แกงกะหรี่gaeng-gà-rìi: on its own, กะหรี่gà-rìi is also crude slang for a prostitute.

In the South, แกงเหลืองgaeng-lǔeang, literally "yellow curry", is a different dish: a sour, very spicy fish curry with no coconut milk.
