Unit 20 · Lesson 3 · Pattern
Give, let and for: ให้
One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.
How it works
1 Give
On its own, ให้hâi is 'give'. The thing comes first, then the person, with no word for 'to': ให้ของขวัญยายhâi kǎwng-kwǎn yaai give Grandma a present. To say who something is for, put ให้hâi + the person after it: อันนี้ให้ยายan níi hâi yaai this one's for Grandma.
- ยาย yaaiให้ hâiขนม kà-nǒmหลาน lǎan
Grandma gives the grandkids sweets.
- อันนี้ an níiให้ hâiยาย yaai
This one is for Grandma.
2 Do something for someone
After an action, ให้hâi + person means 'for': ซื้อขนมให้หลานsúue kà-nǒm hâi lǎan buy sweets for the grandkids. You know it from ช่วย…ให้หน่อยchûay … hâi nàwy. Leave the person out when it's obvious: แม่ห่อให้mâe hàw hâi Mum wraps it up for you.
ซื้อ…มาให้súue … maa hâi is the gift-giver's phrase: I bought this and brought it for you.
- ซื้อ súueของขวัญ kǎwng-kwǎnมา maaให้ hâiยาย yaaiครับ kráp
I've brought Grandma a present.
Men ซื้อของขวัญมาให้ยายครับ Women ซื้อของขวัญมาให้ยายค่ะ
- แม่น้อย mâe-náwyห่อ hàwข้าวซอย kâao-sawyให้ hâi
Mae Noi wrapped up some khao soi for me.
- ช่วย chûayห่อ hàwให้ hâiหน่อย nàwyได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp
Could you wrap it up for me?
Men ช่วยห่อให้หน่อยได้ไหมครับ Women ช่วยห่อให้หน่อยได้ไหมคะ
3 Let, or have someone do it
Before a person and a verb, ให้hâi means 'let' or 'have someone do': แม่ให้ฝนไปซื้อน้ำแข็งmâe hâi fǒn bpai súue nám-kǎeng Mum sends Fon to buy ice. ไม่ให้mâi hâi is 'not let': หมอไม่ให้ยายกินเค็มmǎw mâi hâi yaai gin kem the doctor won't let Grandma eat salty food.
- แม่ mâeให้ hâiฝน fǒnไป bpaiซื้อ súueน้ำแข็ง nám-kǎeng
Mum sent Fon to buy ice.
- หมอ mǎwไม่ mâiให้ hâiยาย yaaiกิน ginเค็ม kem
The doctor won't let Grandma eat salty food.
| Thai | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ให้เงินฝนhâi ngoen fǒn | give Fon money |
| ซื้อให้ฝนsúue hâi fǒn | buy it for Fon |
| ให้ฝนซื้อhâi fǒn súue | have Fon buy it; let Fon buy it |
4 Wishes
ขอให้kǎw-hâi (from Songkran) starts a wish: ขอให้kǎw-hâi + the person + what you wish them: ขอให้ยายแข็งแรงนะkǎw-hâi yaai kǎeng-raeng ná Stay healthy, Grandma! When you're wishing the person you're talking to, leave them out: ขอให้มีความสุขนะkǎw-hâi mii kwaam-sùk ná May you be happy!
- ขอให้ kǎw-hâiยาย yaaiแข็งแรง kǎeng-raengนะ ná
Stay healthy, Grandma!
- ขอให้ kǎw-hâiมีความสุข mii kwaam-sùkนะ ná
May you be happy!
Tips
- •Family words work as 'I' and 'you': when Dad says พ่อจะซื้อให้นะpâw jà súue hâi ná, he means 'I'll buy it for you'.
- •ซื้อขนมมาฝากsúue kà-nǒm maa fàak is another way to say 'I've brought you some sweets', for a small gift you bring along.
