Relatives, respect and gifts

  • ญาติ yâat

    relative(s) noun

    Uncles and aunties have their own words: ลุงlung and ป้าbpâa are older than your parents, น้าnáa and อาaa younger.

    • ญาติ yâatเยอะ yóeมาก mâak

      So many relatives!

    • ญาติ yâatมาจาก maa jàakกรุงเทพ grung-têep

      Our relatives came from Bangkok.

  • ลูกพี่ลูกน้อง lûuk-pîi-lûuk-náwng

    cousin noun

    Literally 'the children of older and younger siblings'. Day to day, cousins simply call each other พี่pîi and น้องnáwng.

    • เขา kǎoเป็น bpenลูกพี่ลูกน้อง lûuk-pîi-lûuk-náwngฝน fǒn

      He's Fon's cousin.

    • มี miiลูกพี่ลูกน้อง lûuk-pîi-lûuk-náwngเยอะ yóeมาก mâak

      I have lots of cousins.

  • รู้จัก rúu-jàk

    to know (a person or a place), to be acquainted with verb

    For people and places. For facts, use รู้rúu: รู้จักฝนrúu-jàk fǒn (know Fon), but รู้ไหมrúu mǎi (do you know?).

    • รู้จัก rúu-jàkฝน fǒnไหม mǎi

      Do you know Fon?

    • รู้จัก rúu-jàkร้าน ráanนี้ níiไหม mǎi

      Do you know this restaurant?

  • อายุ aa-yú

    age; to be … years old noun

    Just อายุaa-yú + the number: อายุยี่สิบแปดaa-yú yîi-sìp bpàet (I'm 28). Thais ask early, because your age decides whether you're พี่pîi or น้องnáwng.

    • ยาย yaaiอายุ aa-yúเจ็ด jètสิบ sìpแปด bpàet

      Grandma is 78.

    • อายุ aa-yúเท่าไหร่ tâo-ràiครับ kráp

      How old are you?

      Men อายุเท่าไหร่ครับ Women อายุเท่าไหร่คะ

  • เกิด gòet

    to be born verb

    Your birthday is your วันเกิดwan gòet: สุขสันต์วันเกิดsùk-sǎn wan gòet Happy birthday!

    • เกิด gòetที่ไหน tîi-nǎi

      Where were you born?

    • ฝน fǒnเกิด gòetที่ tîiเชียงใหม่ chiang-mài

      Fon was born in Chiang Mai.

  • ให้ hâi

    to give; to let, to have (someone do something) verb

    You know ให้hâi as 'for' in ช่วยดูให้หน่อยchûay duu hâi nàwy. On its own it means 'give', and before a person and a verb, 'let'.

    • ยาย yaaiให้ hâiขนม kà-nǒmหลาน lǎan

      Grandma gives the grandkids sweets.

    • แม่ mâeไม่ mâiให้ hâiไป bpai

      Mum won't let me go.

  • ของขวัญ kǎwng-kwǎn

    gift, present noun

    A present for a birthday or a visit. ของฝากkǎwng-fàak is what you bring back from a trip.

    • ซื้อ súueของขวัญ kǎwng-kwǎnให้ hâiแม่ mâe

      I bought a present for Mum.

    • ของขวัญ kǎwng-kwǎnสวย sǔayมาก mâak

      What a beautiful present!

  • ห่อ hàw

    to wrap; parcel, package verb

    Takeaway food is wrapped too: ห่อกลับบ้านhàw glàp bâan is to take it home.

    • ช่วย chûayห่อ hàwให้ hâiหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

      Could you wrap it for me?

      Men ช่วยห่อให้หน่อยครับ Women ช่วยห่อให้หน่อยค่ะ

    • ห่อ hàwกลับบ้าน glàp bâanได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Can I take it home?

      Men ห่อกลับบ้านได้ไหมครับ Women ห่อกลับบ้านได้ไหมคะ

  • เกรงใจ greeng-jai

    to be considerate, not want to trouble someone (kreng jai) verb

    The feeling that stops you imposing on people. Hosts answer it with ไม่ต้องเกรงใจmâi dtâwng greeng-jai: don't be shy, help yourself.

    • ไม่ต้อง mâi dtâwngเกรงใจ greeng-jai

      Don't be shy, help yourself.

    • เกรงใจ greeng-jaiจัง jang

      I feel bad putting you out!

  • ใจดี jai-dii

    kind, good-hearted adjective

    Lots of feelings are built on ใจjai (heart): ใจดีjai-dii, เกรงใจgreeng-jai, and เข้าใจkâo-jai (understand).

    • ทุก túkคน konใจดี jai-diiมาก mâak

      Everyone's so kind.

    • ยาย yaaiใจดี jai-diiมาก mâak

      Grandma's so kind.

  • รัก rák

    to love verb

    For the people and places you really love. For food and hobbies, Thais just say ชอบมากchâwp mâak.

    • รัก rákครอบครัว krâwp-kruaมาก mâak

      I love my family very much.

    • รัก rákแม่ mâeนะ ná

      Love you, Mum!

  • น่ารัก nâa-rák

    cute, lovely, sweet adjective

    Literally 'lovable': for children, pets and clothes, and for kind people: น่ารักมากnâa-rák mâak can mean 'that's so sweet of you'.

    • หลาน lǎanน่ารัก nâa-rákมาก mâak

      Your grandchild is so cute!

    • ร้าน ráanนี้ níiน่ารัก nâa-rák

      This café is lovely.

  • แข็งแรง kǎeng-raeng

    strong; healthy, fit adjective

    The word for good health, especially in older people: ขอให้แข็งแรงนะkǎw-hâi kǎeng-raeng ná is a lovely wish for an elder.

    • ยาย yaaiยัง yangแข็งแรง kǎeng-raengมาก mâak

      Grandma's still really strong.

    • ขอให้ kǎw-hâiแข็งแรง kǎeng-raengนะ ná

      Stay healthy!
