If…then: ถ้า…ก็

How it works

Say if with ถ้าtâa and start the result with ก็gâw and จะjà; give advice with ควรkuan, อย่าyàa, ลองlawng…ดูduu and the softer น่าจะnâa-jà.

1 If…, then…

The condition comes first, with ถ้าtâa (if). The result follows, usually starting with ก็gâw (then) and จะjà (will): ถ้าเงินเดือนดีก็จะย้ายtâa ngoen-duean dii gâw jà yáai If the salary's good, I'll move.

You can leave out ก็gâw or จะjà, but with both the sentence sounds smooth and natural. With ได้dâi at the end, the result is something you can do: ถ้าไม่ชอบก็กลับกรุงเทพได้tâa mâi châwp gâw glàp grung-têep dâi If you don't like it, you can always go back to Bangkok.

  • ถ้า tâaเงินเดือน ngoen-dueanดี diiก็ gâwจะ jàย้าย yáai

    If the salary's good, I'll move.

  • ถ้า tâaไม่ mâiลอง lawngก็ gâwจะ jàเสียดาย sǐa-daai

    If you don't try, you'll regret it.

  • ถ้า tâaไม่ mâiชอบ châwpก็ gâwกลับ glàpกรุงเทพ grung-têepได้ dâi

    If you don't like it, you can always go back to Bangkok.

2 If I were you

Thai verbs don't change for were and would. Say ถ้าเป็นผมtâa bpen pǒm or ถ้าเป็นฉันtâa bpen chǎn, literally 'if it were me', then what you'd do with จะjà. Friends often say ถ้าเป็นเราtâa bpen rao, which works for anyone.

To ask for advice, turn it round: ถ้าเป็นคุณจะทำยังไงtâa bpen kun jà tam yang-ngai What would you do if you were me?

  • ถ้า tâaเป็น bpenผม pǒmจะ jàลอง lawngดู duu

    If I were you, I'd give it a try.

    Men ถ้าเป็นผมจะลองดู Women ถ้าเป็นฉันจะลองดู

  • ถ้า tâaเป็น bpenผม pǒmจะ jàยัง yangไม่ mâiลาออก laa-àwk

    If I were you, I wouldn't quit yet.

    Men ถ้าเป็นผมจะยังไม่ลาออก Women ถ้าเป็นฉันจะยังไม่ลาออก

  • ถ้า tâaเป็น bpenคุณ kunจะ jàทำ tamยังไง yang-ngai

    What would you do if you were me?

3 Giving advice

From firm to gentle:

  • ควรkuan or ไม่ควรmâi kuan + verb: you should, you shouldn't.
  • อย่าyàa + verb + นะná: don't…, okay? อย่าเพิ่งyàa pôeng means 'don't … just yet'.
  • ลองlawng + verb + ดูduu: try it and see.
  • น่าจะnâa-jà + verb: it would be good to. อาจจะàat-jà is 'might'.
  • … + ดีกว่าdii gwàa: it's better to (suggesting another way).

Tips

  • •The ถ้าtâa part can also go second: จะย้ายถ้าเงินเดือนดีjà yáai tâa ngoen-duean dii I'll move if the salary's good. Then there's no ก็gâw.
  • •ทำไมไม่ลองดูtam-mai mâi lawng duu (why not give it a try?) is a friendly push.
  • •อย่าyàa on its own can sound bossy: soften it with นะná and a smile.
  • •อย่าคิดมากyàa kít mâak, literally 'don't think a lot', means 'don't overthink it, don't worry'.
