Advice and the bill

The words

  • ถ้า tâa

    if conjunction

    Falling tone, with a long aa. The result often starts with ก็gâw: ถ้าว่างก็มานะtâa wâang gâw maa ná If you're free, come over.

    • ถ้า tâaว่าง wâangก็ gâwมา maaนะ ná

      If you're free, come over.

    • ถ้า tâaฝนตก fǒn dtòkก็ gâwไม่ mâiไป bpai

      If it rains, I won't go.

  • อย่า yàa

    don't (+ verb) adverb

    Low tone; mid-tone ยาyaa is medicine. Add นะná to keep it friendly: อย่าลืมนะyàa luuem ná Don't forget, okay?

    • อย่า yàaลืม luuemนะ ná

      Don't forget, okay?

    • อย่า yàaเพิ่ง pôengลาออก laa-àwkนะ ná

      Don't quit just yet.

  • ลอง lawng

    to try (try … and see) verb

    You know it from ลองใส่lawng sài (try on). Put the action in the middle and ดูduu at the end: ลองกินดูlawng gin duu try it and see.

    • ลอง lawngดู duuก่อน gàwn

      Try it first and see.

    • ลอง lawngกิน ginดู duuไหม mǎi

      Do you want to try some?

  • คำแนะนำ kam-náe-nam

    advice, a recommendation noun

    • ขอ kǎwคำแนะนำ kam-náe-namหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

      Could I ask your advice?

      Men ขอคำแนะนำหน่อยครับ Women ขอคำแนะนำหน่อยค่ะ

    • ขอบคุณ kàwp-kunสำหรับ sǎm-ràpคำแนะนำ kam-náe-namครับ kráp

      Thanks for the advice.

  • ปรึกษา bprùek-sǎa

    to consult, ask someone's advice verb

    Put the person straight after it: ปรึกษาหมอbprùek-sǎa mǎw see a doctor about it, ปรึกษาแม่bprùek-sǎa mâe talk it over with Mum.

    • อยาก yàakปรึกษา bprùek-sǎaหน่อย nàwy

      I'd like your advice on something.

    • ปรึกษา bprùek-sǎaแม่ mâeก่อน gàwnดีกว่า dii gwàa

      Better talk it over with your mum first.

  • อาจจะ àat-jà

    might, maybe adverb

    Before the verb: อาจจะไม่ว่างàat-jà mâi wâang I might not be free. On its own it's a soft, non-committal 'maybe'.

    • พรุ่งนี้ prûng-níiอาจจะ àat-jàฝนตก fǒn dtòk

      It might rain tomorrow.

    • อาจจะ àat-jàไม่ mâiว่าง wâang

      I might not be free.

  • น่าจะ nâa-jà

    probably; should (it would be best to) adverb

    A soft guess (น่าจะดีnâa-jà dii it's probably good) or soft advice (น่าจะลองnâa-jà lawng you should give it a try).

    • น่าจะ nâa-jàคุ้ม kúmนะ ná

      It's probably worth it.

    • น่าจะ nâa-jàลอง lawngดู duuนะ ná

      You should give it a try.

  • สำคัญ sǎm-kan

    important adjective

    • ครอบครัว krâwp-kruaสำคัญ sǎm-kanที่สุด tîi-sùt

      Family matters most.

    • เรื่อง rûeangนี้ níiสำคัญ sǎm-kanมาก mâak

      This is really important.

  • เป็นห่วง bpen-hùang

    to worry about (someone) verb

    Worrying because you care. You know the same ห่วงhùang from ไม่ต้องห่วงmâi dtâwng hùang (don't worry).

    • เป็นห่วง bpen-hùangแม่ mâe

      I worry about my mum.

    • ไม่ต้อง mâi dtâwngเป็นห่วง bpen-hùang

      Don't worry about me.

  • เสียดาย sǐa-daai

    what a pity; to regret missing (something) verb

    For a missed chance, or something good going to waste: Thais say it over leftover food, too.

    • เสียดาย sǐa-daaiมาก mâak

      What a shame.

    • ถ้า tâaไม่ mâiไป bpaiจะ jàเสียดาย sǐa-daaiนะ ná

      If you don't go, you'll regret it.

  • เลี้ยง líang

    to treat (someone to a meal); to raise, look after verb

    'It's on me' is ผมเลี้ยงเองpǒm líang eeng or ฉันเลี้ยงเองchǎn líang eeng. The same verb means to raise children or keep a pet.

    • วันนี้ wan-níiผม pǒmเลี้ยง líangเอง eeng

      Today it's on me.

      Men วันนี้ผมเลี้ยงเอง Women วันนี้ฉันเลี้ยงเอง

    • เดี๋ยว dǐawผม pǒmเลี้ยง líangข้าว kâaoนะ ná

      I'll buy you a meal sometime.

      Men เดี๋ยวผมเลี้ยงข้าวนะ Women เดี๋ยวฉันเลี้ยงข้าวนะ

  • แยกบิล yâek bin

    to split the bill (everyone pays their own) phrase

    Everyone pays for what they had. Splitting the total equally is หารกันhǎan gan, 'divide it'.

    • แยกบิล yâek binได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Can we split the bill?

      Men แยกบิลได้ไหมครับ Women แยกบิลได้ไหมคะ

    • แยกบิล yâek binกัน ganดีกว่า dii gwàa

      Let's just split the bill.
