- เกาะ gàw
island noun
Islands are named with it in front: เกาะลันตาgàw-lan-dtaa is Koh Lanta. The Koh on English maps is this word.
- เกาะ gàwนี้ níiสวย sǔayมาก mâak
This island is so beautiful.
- อยาก yàakไป bpaiเกาะ gàwไหน nǎi
Which island do you want to go to?

- ทะเล tá-lee
sea; the seaside noun
ไปทะเลbpai tá-lee means a trip to the seaside, not sailing out to sea. You know it from อาหารทะเลaa-hǎan-tá-lee (seafood).
- อยาก yàakไป bpaiทะเล tá-lee
I want to go to the seaside.
- ทะเล tá-leeที่นี่ tîi-nîiสวย sǔayมาก mâak
The sea here is really beautiful.

beach noun
Beach names use the short form หาดhàat: Patong Beach is หาดป่าตองhàat bpàa-dtawng.
- ชายหาด chaai-hàatอยู่ yùuไกล glaiไหม mǎi
Is the beach far?
- ชายหาด chaai-hàatนี้ níiคน konไม่ mâiเยอะ yóe
This beach isn't crowded.

boat noun
You ride a boat like any vehicle: นั่งเรือnâng ruea (take the boat).
- เรือ rueaออก àwkกี่ gìiโมง moongครับ kráp
What time does the boat leave?
Men เรือออกกี่โมงครับ Women เรือออกกี่โมงคะ
- นั่ง nângเรือ rueaไป bpaiเกาะ gàwนาน naanไหม mǎi
Is it a long boat ride to the island?

Say the k and the l together in one beat. Thais often drop the l in fast speech, but the full kl is always right.
- วันนี้ wan-níiคลื่น klûuenใหญ่ yàiมาก mâak
The waves are really big today.
- ระวัง rá-wangคลื่น klûuenนะ ná
Watch out for the waves.

dangerous; danger adjective

It's dangerous to swim right now.

It's not dangerous, really.

to snorkel, to dive verb
Thais use it for snorkelling and scuba diving alike.

Start with a bp without a puff of air, then the l straight after it.
- มี miiปลา bplaaเยอะ yóeมาก mâak
There are loads of fish.
- ชอบ châwpกิน ginปลา bplaaไหม mǎi
Do you like fish?

- โดน doon
to get hit, stung or caught (something happens to you) verb
For things that happen to you, usually bad ones: โดนฝนdoon fǒn (get caught in the rain), โดนแดดdoon dàet (get too much sun).
- เมื่อวาน mûea-waanโดน doonฝน fǒn
I got caught in the rain yesterday.
- โดน doonแดด dàetเยอะ yóeมาก mâak
I got so much sun.

to be afraid (of), scared verb
What you're afraid of comes straight after it, with no word for of: กลัวทะเลglua tá-lee (scared of the sea).
- กลัว gluaมาก mâak
I'm really scared.
- ไม่ต้อง mâi dtâwngกลัว glua
Don't be scared.
