Phrases to say out loud

- วันนี้ wan-níiคลื่น klûuenใหญ่ yàiมาก mâak
The waves are really big today.
คลื่นklûuen: k and l in one beat, then a falling tone. Not 'ka-lûuen'. - ผม pǒmกลัว gluaทะเล tá-leeนิดหน่อย nít-nàwy
I'm a bit scared of the sea.
Men ผมกลัวทะเลนิดหน่อย pǒm glua tá-lee nít-nàwyWomen ฉันกลัวทะเลนิดหน่อย chǎn glua tá-lee nít-nàwy
กลัวglua is one syllable: g and l together, then a level ua. - พระอาทิตย์ตก prá-aa-tít dtòkสวย sǔayมาก mâak
The sunset is gorgeous.
พระอาทิตย์prá-aa-tít starts with pr: tap the r right after the p, on a short high syllable. - มี miiปลา bplaaเยอะ yóeมาก mâak
There are loads of fish.
ปลาbplaa: no puff of air on the bp, and the l straight after it. - ตอนที่ dtawn-tîiดำน้ำ dam-náamเห็น hěnปลา bplaaเยอะ yóeมาก mâak
When I was snorkelling, I saw loads of fish.
ดำน้ำdam-náam goes level, then high; เห็นhěn dips and rises. - แล้ว láewเกิดอะไรขึ้น gòet à-rai kûen
And then what happened?
เกิดgòet has the oe vowel (like 'her' without the r) and a low tone; ขึ้นkûen falls. - จริง jingเหรอ rǒe
Really?
In จริงjing the r is silent, even in careful speech. Then let เหรอrǒe rise like a surprised question. - เหนื่อย nùeayมาก mâakเลย loei
I'm absolutely exhausted.
เหนื่อยnùeay is low: start low and stay there, gliding ue-a-y in one syllable. - ไป bpaiลอยกระทง lawy grà-tongที่ tîiเชียงใหม่ chiang-màiกัน ganไหม mǎi
Shall we go to Chiang Mai for Loy Krathong?
กระทงgrà-tong starts with gr: say both sounds, then a short low syllable.
Role-play: Boss missed the story
Boss arrived late at the café and missed everything. Tell him about your trip to Koh Lanta from start to finish.
