Unit 21 · Lesson 3 · Pattern
Telling a story: ก่อน, หลังจาก, ตอนที่
One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.
How it works
1 First, then, in the end
A good story has signposts. Start with ทีแรกtii-râek (at first), move on with แล้วก็láew gâw (and then) or หลังจากนั้นlǎng-jàak nán (after that), and finish with สุดท้ายsùt-táai (in the end).
ทีแรกtii-râek hints that things changed later: ทีแรกกลัวtii-râek glua means you were scared at first, but not any more. สุดท้ายก็sùt-táai gâw + verb is how Thai says in the end I ….
- ทีแรก tii-râekคลื่น klûuenใหญ่ yàiมาก mâak
At first the waves were huge.
- แล้ว láewก็ gâwเช่า châoมอเตอร์ไซค์ maw-dtôe-sai
And then I rented a motorbike.
- สุดท้าย sùt-táaiก็ gâwไป bpaiดู duuพระอาทิตย์ตก prá-aa-tít dtòk
In the end we went to watch the sunset.
2 Before, after, when
For before, after and when, put a time word in front of an action: ก่อนgàwn + verb (before), หลังจากlǎng-jàak + action (after), ตอนที่dtawn-tîi + action (when, while). The time part can come first or last, as in English.
When it comes first, the main part often starts with ก็gâw (then): หลังจากกินข้าวก็ไปดำน้ำlǎng-jàak gin kâao gâw bpai dam-náam (after we'd eaten, we went snorkelling). ก็gâw is optional: ตอนที่ดำน้ำเห็นปลาเยอะมากdtawn-tîi dam-náam hěn bplaa yóe mâak is fine without it.
- หลังจาก lǎng-jàakกิน ginข้าว kâaoก็ gâwไป bpaiดำน้ำ dam-náam
After we'd eaten, we went snorkelling.
- ตอนที่ dtawn-tîiดำน้ำ dam-náamเห็น hěnปลา bplaaเยอะ yóeมาก mâak
When I was snorkelling, I saw loads of fish.
- ผม pǒmอาบน้ำ àap-náamก่อน gàwnนอน nawn
I take a shower before bed.
Men ผมอาบน้ำก่อนนอน Women ฉันอาบน้ำก่อนนอน
| First | Last |
|---|---|
| ก่อนนอนอาบน้ำgàwn nawn àap-náam | อาบน้ำก่อนนอนàap-náam gàwn nawn |
| หลังจากกินข้าวก็ไปทะเลlǎng-jàak gin kâao gâw bpai tá-lee | ไปทะเลหลังจากกินข้าวbpai tá-lee lǎng-jàak gin kâao |
3 Talking about the past
Thai verbs never change for the past: time words do the work, like เมื่อวานmûea-waan (yesterday), เดือนที่แล้วduean tîi-láew (last month) or ปีที่แล้วbpii tîi-láew (last year). Three more tools make a story sound natural:
- ได้dâi + verb: what you got to do: ได้เห็นพระอาทิตย์ตกdâi hěn prá-aa-tít dtòk (I got to see the sunset).
- ไม่ได้mâi dâi + verb: what you didn't do: ไม่ได้ไปภูเก็ตmâi dâi bpai puu-gèt (I didn't go to Phuket).
- ไปbpai + place + มาmaa: a trip you're back from: ไปเกาะลันตามาbpai gàw-lan-dtaa maa (I've been to Koh Lanta).
- ได้ dâiเห็น hěnพระอาทิตย์ตก prá-aa-tít dtòkที่ tîiชายหาด chaai-hàat
I got to see the sunset on the beach.
- ไม่ mâiได้ dâiไป bpaiภูเก็ต puu-gèt
I didn't get to go to Phuket.
- ไป bpaiเที่ยว tîawเกาะลันตา gàw-lan-dtaaมา maa
I've been on a trip to Koh Lanta.
Tips
- •ก่อนgàwn at the end of a sentence means first: กินข้าวก่อนgin kâao gàwn (let's eat first). Before a verb it means before.
- •React to a story with จริงเหรอjing rǒe (really?) and keep it going with แล้วเกิดอะไรขึ้นláew gòet à-rai kûen (and then what happened?).
- •ไม่ได้mâi dâi + verb is the everyday didn't: เมื่อวานไม่ได้ไปmûea-waan mâi dâi bpai (I didn't go yesterday).
- •You know หลังlǎng from หลังอาหารlǎng aa-hǎan (after meals). In stories you'll mostly hear the full หลังจากlǎng-jàak.
