Unit 18 · Lesson 3 · Pattern

Right now: กำลัง…อยู่

One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.

How it works

Put กำลังgam-lang before a verb, often with อยู่yùu after it, for something happening right now; ยังyang + verb + อยู่yùu means 'still'.

1 Happening right now

Thai verbs never change for -ing. To show that something is going on right now, put กำลังgam-lang in front of the verb: กำลังกินgam-lang gin (I'm) eating, ฝนกำลังตกfǒn gam-lang dtòk it's raining. Add อยู่yùu after the verb and its object to stress 'at the moment': กำลังทำการบ้านอยู่gam-lang tam gaan-bâan yùu.

In everyday speech, verb + อยู่yùu on its own is just as common: ทำอะไรอยู่tam à-rai yùu What are you doing? คุยอยู่kui yùu I'm chatting. Put ตอนนี้dtawn-níi (now) in front to make it clear: ตอนนี้ฝนตกหนักdtawn-níi fǒn dtòk nàk it's pouring right now.

  • ฝน fǒnกำลัง gam-langตก dtòk

    It's raining right now.

  • กำลัง gam-langทำ tamการบ้าน gaan-bâanอยู่ yùu

    I'm doing my homework.

  • ทำ tamอะไร à-raiอยู่ yùu

    What are you doing?

Three ways to say 'I'm eating'
ThaiFeel
กำลังกินgam-lang ginright now
กินอยู่gin yùuat the moment (casual, very common)
กำลังกินอยู่gam-lang gin yùuin the middle of eating (strongest)

2 Still, and not any more

ยังyang (still) goes before the verb, with อยู่yùu after it: ฝนยังตกอยู่fǒn yang dtòk yùu it's still raining. When something has changed, use verb + แล้วláew, as in unit 15: ฝนหยุดแล้วfǒn yùt láew the rain has stopped, แดดออกแล้วdàet àwk láew the sun's out now.

  • ฝน fǒnยัง yangตก dtòkอยู่ yùu

    It's still raining.

  • ฝน fǒnหยุด yùtแล้ว láew

    The rain has stopped.

  • แดด dàetออก àwkแล้ว láew

    The sun's come out.

3 Talking about the weather

Weather words are plain verbs and adjectives, with no 'it is': ฝนตกfǒn dtòk it's raining, ฟ้าร้องfáa-ráwng it's thundering, ร้อนráwn it's hot, ฝุ่นเยอะfùn yóe the smog is bad, อากาศดีaa-gàat dii the weather's nice. Temperatures are a number + องศาong-sǎa.

Seasons are หน้าnâa + the weather: หน้าฝนnâa-fǒn, หน้าร้อนnâa-ráwn, หน้าหนาวnâa-nǎao. Put the season first to say in that season: หน้าฝนฝนตกทุกวันnâa-fǒn fǒn dtòk túk wan.

  • ตอนนี้ dtawn-níiฝน fǒnตก dtòkหนัก nàk

    It's pouring right now.

  • วันนี้ wan-níiสาม sǎamสิบ sìpห้า hâaองศา ong-sǎa

    It's 35 degrees today.

  • หน้าหนาว nâa-nǎaoอากาศ aa-gàatดี diiมาก mâak

The weather is lovely in the cool season.

Tips

  • •Fon or the rain? ฝนกำลังทำการบ้านอยู่fǒn gam-lang tam gaan-bâan yùu is Fon doing her homework: rain can't do homework!
  • •Feelings and states need no กำลังgam-lang: just หนาวnǎao (I'm cold) or เปียกbpìak (I'm wet).
  • •The อยู่yùu after a verb is the 'be somewhere' of unit 8: you're in the middle of something.
  • •เดี๋ยวก็หยุดdǐaw gâw yùt (it'll stop in a moment) is the classic rainy-season comfort.
