Speaking practice: Rainy season

Phrases to say out loud
Listen, then say each one. In the app the speech trainer scores your tones word by word.
- ฝน fǒnตก dtòkหนัก nàkมาก mâak
It's pouring.
Rising, low, low, falling: ฝนfǒn climbs, ตกdtòk and หนักnàk are short and low, มากmâak falls. - ฝุ่น fùnเยอะ yóeมาก mâak
The smog is really bad.
ฝุ่นfùn (smog) is short and low; rising ฝนfǒn is rain. Same f, different tone. - ฝน fǒnกำลัง gam-langตก dtòk
It's raining right now.
Rise on ฝนfǒn, keep กำลังgam-lang level, then drop to a short, low ตกdtòk. - ฝน fǒnหยุด yùtแล้ว láew
The rain has stopped.
หยุดyùt is low and ends in a t you don't release: stop the air with your tongue and stay silent. - กำลัง gam-langรอ rawฝน fǒnหยุด yùt
I'm waiting for the rain to stop.
กำลังgam-lang and รอraw are all mid: flat and calm. Then rise on ฝนfǒn and drop to a low หยุดyùt. - ทำ tamอะไร à-raiอยู่ yùu
What are you doing?
อยู่yùu is long and low: hold it there, and don't let it rise like an English question. - ไม่ mâiมี miiร่ม rôm
I don't have an umbrella.
ร่มrôm falls, just like ไม่mâi: start high and drop. - หนาว nǎaoไหม mǎi
Are you cold?
Two rising tones: dip and climb on หนาวnǎao, then again on ไหมmǎi. - แดด dàetออก àwkแล้ว láew
The sun's come out.
แดดdàet and ออกàwk are both low, each ending in a stop you hold: t, then k.
Role-play: Stuck in the rain
It's pouring and you're stuck at Fon's place. Chat about the weather and what everyone is doing while you wait for the rain to stop.
