Phrases to say out loud

    สุขsùk and สันต์sǎn both start with s, a high-class letter: the short, dead สุขsùk is low, the live สันต์sǎn rises.

    Have you ever played Songkran?

    สงกรานต์sǒng-graan: rise on สงsǒng, then keep กรานต์graan mid, with g and r said together.

    I've never played Songkran.

    เคยkoei is mid, with the oe vowel of เงินngoen: relaxed lips, then a glide to i.
  • ไป bpaiมา maaหลาย lǎaiครั้ง krángแล้ว láew

    I've been lots of times.

    The silent h in หลายlǎai makes it a high-class syllable, so it rises; then ครั้งkráng is high, with k and r together.
  • ไม่ mâiเคย koeiเห็น hěnแบบ bàepนี้ níi

    I've never seen anything like this.

    เห็นhěn rises: start low and climb, like a doubtful 'hmm?'.
  • สาด sàatน้ำ náamกัน gan

    Let's splash each other!

    สาดsàat is low: a long a, then stop on a t you don't release.
  • ขอให้ kǎw-hâiมีความสุข mii kwaam-sùkนะ ná

    May you be happy!

    Rising ขอkǎw, falling ให้hâi, two level mid syllables, then a short, low สุขsùk.
  • มา maaเมือง mueangไทย taiครั้งแรก kráng-râek

    เมืองmueang has the uea vowel: start with ue (lips spread as for 'ee', tongue pulled back), then glide to a.

Role-play: Water guns at Tha Phae Gate

It's Songkran afternoon at Tha Phae Gate. You need a water gun and a waterproof phone pouch, and the chatty vendor wants to know all about you.
