  • ชวน chuan

    to invite, to ask someone along verb

    Casual and friendly, for asking people along to anything from lunch to a festival.

    • ฝน fǒnชวน chuanไป bpaiวัด wát

      Fon invited me to the temple.

    • ชวน chuanเพื่อน pûeanมา maaด้วย dûayได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Can I bring a friend along?

      Men ชวนเพื่อนมาด้วยได้ไหมครับ Women ชวนเพื่อนมาด้วยได้ไหมคะ

  • สาด sàat

    to splash, to throw (water) verb

    สาดน้ำsàat náam is to splash water; สาดน้ำกันsàat náam gan is to splash each other.

    • สาด sàatน้ำ náamกัน gan

      Let's splash each other!

    • ทุก túkคน konสาด sàatน้ำ náam

      Everyone's splashing water.

  • ปืนฉีดน้ำ bpuuen-chìit-náam

    • มี miiปืนฉีดน้ำ bpuuen-chìit-náamไหม mǎi

      Do you have a water gun?

    • อยาก yàakได้ dâiปืนฉีดน้ำ bpuuen-chìit-náamอัน anใหญ่ yàiครับ kráp

      I'd like a big water gun.

      Men อยากได้ปืนฉีดน้ำอันใหญ่ครับ Women อยากได้ปืนฉีดน้ำอันใหญ่ค่ะ

  • กันน้ำ gan-náam

    waterproof adjective

    This กันgan means 'keep out', not 'together'. A waterproof phone pouch is a ถุงกันน้ำtǔng gan-náam, sold on every corner at Songkran.

    • โทรศัพท์ too-rá-sàpกันน้ำ gan-náamไหม mǎi

      Is your phone waterproof?

    • ถุง tǔngกันน้ำ gan-náamใบ baiละ láห้า hâaสิบ sìpบาท bàat

      Waterproof pouches are 50 baht each.

  • ตื่นเต้น dtùuen-dtên

    excited adjective

    Excited, and often a little nervous too: before a festival, an exam or a first date.

    • ตื่นเต้น dtùuen-dtênมาก mâak

      I'm so excited!

    • ตื่นเต้น dtùuen-dtênไหม mǎi

      Are you excited?

  • เคย koei

    have ever (done); used to adverb

    It goes before the verb: เคยไปkoei bpai have been; ไม่เคยmâi koei never.

    • เคย koeiไป bpaiภูเก็ต puu-gètไหม mǎi

      Have you ever been to Phuket?

    • ไม่ mâiเคย koeiไป bpai

      I've never been.

  • ครั้งแรก kráng-râek

    the first time noun

    นี่ครั้งแรกnîi kráng-râek (this is the first time) is the answer that makes Thais smile and look after you.

    • นี่ nîiครั้งแรก kráng-râek

      This is my first time.

    • มา maaเชียงใหม่ chiang-màiครั้งแรก kráng-râek

      It's my first time in Chiang Mai.

  • หลาย lǎai

    many, several adjective

    It goes before a counting word: หลายครั้งlǎai kráng many times, หลายคนlǎai kon lots of people.

    • ไป bpaiหลาย lǎaiครั้ง krángแล้ว láew

      I've been many times.

    • ที่นี่ tîi-nîiมี miiหลาย lǎaiร้าน ráan

      There are lots of shops here.

  • เห็น hěn

    to see verb

    To see or notice something; for watching on purpose (a film, a show, the monks' procession) use ดูduu.

    • เห็น hěnฝน fǒnไหม mǎi

      Have you seen Fon?

    • ไม่ mâiเคย koeiเห็น hěnแบบ bàepนี้ níi

      I've never seen anything like this.

  • เมือง mueang

    city, town; country (เมืองไทย = Thailand) noun

    เมืองไทยmueang tai is the warm, everyday name for Thailand, and ในเมืองnai mueang means 'in town'.

    • ชอบ châwpเมือง mueangไทย taiไหม mǎi

      Do you like Thailand?

    • ใน naiเมือง mueangรถติด rót dtìtมาก mâak

      The traffic in town is terrible.
