Unit 5 · Lesson 3 · Pattern
Ordering: ขอ, เอา and หน่อย
One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.
How it works
1 Asking for something
Put ขอkǎw (may I have) in front of whatever you want. It's polite with anyone, from a street vendor to a hotel receptionist. Add หน่อยnàwy at the end to make it softer, then your ครับkráp or ค่ะkâ.
To say how many plates, put the number and จานjaan after the dish. (Counting words get a unit of their own later.)
Some water, please.
Two chicken rice, please.
2 Choosing: I'll have…
When you pick from options, or answer the vendor's question, use เอาao (take) + your choice. Join two things with กับgàp (and).
ไม่เอาmâi ao is a plain 'no, I don't want it'. For a softer 'no, thanks', say ไม่ต้องmâi dtâwng (no need).
- เอา aoอันนี้ an níiครับ kráp
I'll take this one.
I'll have chicken rice and a cold water.
No thanks, I don't want it.
3 Just the way you like it
Leave an ingredient out with ไม่ใส่mâi sài (don't put in) + the ingredient. For the chilli, use the spice words below; เอาao in front makes them an order: เอาเผ็ดน้อยao pèt náwy.
No vegetables, please.
No chilli, please.
| Say | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ไม่เผ็ดmâi pèt | not spicy |
| เผ็ดน้อยpèt náwy | less spicy than usual, mild |
| เผ็ดนิดหน่อยpèt nít-nàwy | a little spicy |
| เผ็ดมากpèt mâak | very spicy |
4 For here or to take away?
Vendors often give you a choice with หรือrǔue (or). A choice question needs no ไหมmǎi: just answer with the option you want. At a food stall, กลับบ้านglàp bâan (go back home) means takeaway.
For here or to take away?
I'll eat here.
Do you want chicken or pork?
Tips
- •Not sure which one to use? ขอkǎw always works. เอาao is for picking between options, like answering ไก่หรือหมูgài rǔue mǔu.
- •ไม่ใส่mâi sài (don't put in) is for ingredients; ไม่เอาmâi ao (don't want) works for anything, like ไม่เอาถุงmâi ao tǔng (no bag).
- •Spoken Thai has no separate word for 'please': ขอkǎw, หน่อยnàwy and your ครับkráp or ค่ะkâ do that job.
