Phrases to say out loud

ไก่gài has a plain g with no puff of air and a low tone; ข้าวkâao has the puff and falls. - ไก่ gàiหรือ rǔueไข่ kài
Chicken or egg?
Both are low; only the puff of air changes the word: ไก่gài (chicken), ไข่kài (egg). Hold your hand in front of your mouth and feel it. - ไม่ mâiใส่ sàiไข่ kàiครับ kráp
No egg, please.

Give ไข่kài a clear puff of air, or you'll be refusing chicken. - เผ็ด pètไหม mǎiครับ kráp
Is it spicy?

เผ็ดpèt is short and low: start low and stop sharply on the t, without releasing it. - ขอ kǎwน้ำ náamหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

ขอkǎw is rising: dip a little, then go up, like a doubtful 'hmm?'. - เอา aoเผ็ด pètน้อย náwyครับ kráp

Keep น้อยnáwy (less) up high; low หน่อยnàwy means 'a bit, please'. - ขอ kǎwข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gàiกลับบ้าน glàp bâanครับ kráp

กลับglàp starts with a gl cluster: say g and l together, with no vowel between them. - หิว hǐuข้าว kâaoมาก mâak
I'm really hungry.
Rising, falling, falling: หิวhǐu goes up, then ข้าวkâao and มากmâak both fall. - อิ่ม ìmแล้ว láew
I'm full.
อิ่มìm is one short, low syllable; แล้วláew is high.
Role-play: Lunch at Pa Daeng's
You're hungry and stop at Pa Daeng's khao man gai stall on your soi. Order the way you like it, get a drink and pay.
