  • ขอ kǎw

    may I have…, I'd like… (asking for something) verb

    The polite way to ask for anything: ขอkǎw + the thing. Add หน่อยnàwy at the end to make it softer.

    • ขอ kǎwน้ำ náamหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

      Some water, please.

      Men ขอน้ำหน่อยครับ Women ขอน้ำหน่อยค่ะ

  • เอา ao

    to take, to have (choosing what you want) verb

    เอาao is for choosing: เอาอันนี้ao an níi (I'll take this one). ไม่เอาmâi ao is a plain 'no, I don't want it'.

    • เอา aoไก่ gàiครับ kráp

      I'll have chicken.

      Men เอาไก่ครับ Women เอาไก่ค่ะ

    • เอา aoไก่ gàiหรือ rǔueหมู mǔu

      Chicken or pork?

  • ใส่ sài

    to put in, to add verb

    ไม่ใส่mâi sài + an ingredient means 'without it': ไม่ใส่ผักmâi sài pàk (no vegetables).

    • ไม่ mâiใส่ sàiผัก pàkครับ kráp

      No vegetables, please.

      Men ไม่ใส่ผักครับ Women ไม่ใส่ผักค่ะ

    • ใส่ sàiไข่ kàiไหม mǎi

      Do you want egg in it?

  • น้อย náwy

    little, less, not much adjective

    High tone. Don't mix it up with หน่อยnàwy (a bit; please), which is low.

    • เผ็ด pètน้อย náwyครับ kráp

      Only a little spicy, please.

      Men เผ็ดน้อยครับ Women เผ็ดน้อยค่ะ

    • หวาน wǎanน้อย náwyครับ kráp

      Less sweet, please.

      Men หวานน้อยครับ Women หวานน้อยค่ะ

  • ที่นี่ tîi-nîi

    here adverb

    • กิน ginที่นี่ tîi-nîiครับ kráp

      I'll eat here.

      Men กินที่นี่ครับ Women กินที่นี่ค่ะ

    • ที่นี่ tîi-nîiอร่อย à-ràwyมาก mâak

      The food here is really good.

  • กลับบ้าน glàp bâan

    to go home; to take away (food) verb

    At a food stall, กลับบ้านglàp bâan (go back home) means takeaway: the vendor packs your food in a bag or box.

    • ขอ kǎwข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gàiกลับบ้าน glàp bâanครับ kráp

      Chicken rice to take away, please.

      Men ขอข้าวมันไก่กลับบ้านครับ Women ขอข้าวมันไก่กลับบ้านค่ะ

    • อยาก yàakกลับบ้าน glàp bâan

      I want to go home.

  • หรือ rǔue

    or conjunction

    A choice with หรือrǔue is already a question, so no ไหมmǎi: ร้อนหรือเย็นráwn rǔue yen (hot or iced?).

    • ชา chaaหรือ rǔueกาแฟ gaa-fae

      Tea or coffee?

    • กาแฟ gaa-faeร้อน ráwnหรือ rǔueเย็น yen

      Hot or iced coffee?

  • กับ gàp

    and; with conjunction

    Join two things you order with กับgàp; it also means 'with' a person.

    • ข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gàiกับ gàpน้ำ náamเย็น yenครับ kráp

      Chicken rice and a cold water, please.

      Men ข้าวมันไก่กับน้ำเย็นครับ Women ข้าวมันไก่กับน้ำเย็นค่ะ

    • กิน ginข้าว kâaoกับ gàpเรา raoไหม mǎi

      Do you want to eat with us?

  • ไม่ต้อง mâi dtâwngครับ kráp

    no need; no thanks phrase

    Men ไม่ต้องครับ mâi dtâwng krápWomen ไม่ต้องค่ะ mâi dtâwng kâ

    A polite 'no thanks' when someone offers you something: a bag, more rice, a straw.

    • ไม่ต้อง mâi dtâwngใส่ sàiถุง tǔngครับ kráp

      No need for a bag.

      Men ไม่ต้องใส่ถุงครับ Women ไม่ต้องใส่ถุงค่ะ

  • ได้เลย dâi loei

    sure; go ahead phrase

    The cheerful 'sure!' you hear from vendors and staff when you ask for something.

    • โอเค oo-keeได้เลย dâi loei

      Okay, sure!

  • รอแป๊บ raw bpáepครับ kráp

    wait a moment; just a sec phrase

    Men รอแป๊บครับ raw bpáep krápWomen รอแป๊บค่ะ raw bpáep kâ

    Casual and used everywhere; staff soften it with นะná: รอแป๊บนะraw bpáep ná.

    • รอแป๊บ raw bpáepนะ náครับ kráp

      Just a moment, okay?

      Men รอแป๊บนะครับ Women รอแป๊บนะคะ

  • อิ่ม ìm

    full (after eating) adjective

    อิ่มแล้วìm láew (full already) is the polite way to say no to more food.

    • อิ่ม ìmมาก mâak

      I'm so full.

    • อิ่ม ìmไหม mǎi

      Are you full?

  • เช็คบิล chék binครับ kráp

    the bill, please; to pay the bill phrase

    Men เช็คบิลครับ chék bin krápWomen เช็คบิลค่ะ chék bin kâ

    From English 'check bill'. At a street stall you can also just ask ทั้งหมดเท่าไหร่táng-mòt tâo-rài (how much altogether?).

    • พี่ pîiเช็คบิล chék binครับ kráp

      Excuse me, the bill, please.

      Men พี่ เช็คบิลครับ Women พี่ เช็คบิลค่ะ
