  • ข้าว kâao

    rice; a meal noun

    กินข้าวgin kâao (eat rice) is the everyday way to say 'have a meal': for Thais, rice is the meal.

    • ไป bpaiกิน ginข้าว kâaoไหม mǎi

      Shall we go and eat?

    • ข้าว kâaoเยอะ yóeมาก mâak

      That's a lot of rice!

  • ข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gài

    Hainanese chicken rice (khao man gai) noun · classifier จาน

    Rice cooked in chicken stock, topped with sliced chicken and served with a soybean, ginger and chilli sauce and a little bowl of soup.

    • อยาก yàakกิน ginข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gài

      I feel like chicken rice.

    • ข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gàiอร่อย à-ràwyมาก mâak

      The chicken rice is really good.

  • ไก่ gài

    chicken noun

    Plain g, no puff of air, low tone. With a puff of air, ไข่kài is egg.

    • ไก่ gàiอร่อย à-ràwyมาก mâak

      The chicken is really good.

    • ไม่ mâiกิน ginไก่ gài

      I don't eat chicken.

  • หมู mǔu

    pork; pig noun

    • ไม่ mâiกิน ginหมู mǔu

      I don't eat pork.

    • ชอบ châwpก๋วยเตี๋ยว gǔay-dtǐawหมู mǔu

      I like pork noodle soup.

  • ไข่ kài

    egg noun

    Aspirated k (with a puff of air), low tone. Without the puff, ไก่gài is chicken.

    • มี miiไข่ kàiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Do you have eggs?

      Men มีไข่ไหมครับ Women มีไข่ไหมคะ

    • ไม่ mâiกิน ginไข่ kài

      I don't eat eggs.

  • ผัก pàk

    vegetables noun

    • ไม่ mâiชอบ châwpผัก pàk

      I don't like vegetables.

    • ชอบ châwpกิน ginผัก pàk

      I like eating vegetables.

  • ก๋วยเตี๋ยว gǔay-dtǐaw

    noodle soup; noodles noun

    Both syllables are rising. Every soi has a noodle stall: you pick the noodles and the meat.

    • อยาก yàakกิน ginก๋วยเตี๋ยว gǔay-dtǐaw

      I feel like noodle soup.

    • ก๋วยเตี๋ยว gǔay-dtǐawไก่ gàiอร่อย à-ràwyมาก mâak

      The chicken noodle soup is really good.

  • พริก prík

    chilli noun

    • พริก príkเยอะ yóeไป bpai

      That's too much chilli.

    • ไม่ mâiชอบ châwpพริก prík

      I don't like chillies.

  • เผ็ด pèt

    spicy, hot (with chilli) adjective

    Short and low. ร้อนráwn is hot like the weather or coffee; เผ็ดpèt is hot from chilli.

    • เผ็ด pètไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Is it spicy?

      Men เผ็ดไหมครับ Women เผ็ดไหมคะ

    • เผ็ด pètนิดหน่อย nít-nàwy

      It's a little spicy.

  • หิว hǐu

    hungry adjective

    You'll often hear หิวข้าวhǐu kâao (hungry for rice) for hungry and หิวน้ำhǐu náam (hungry for water) for thirsty.

    • หิว hǐuไหม mǎi

      Are you hungry?

    • หิว hǐuมาก mâak

      I'm really hungry.

  • จาน jaan

    plate; a plate of (food) noun

    After a dish and a number, จานjaan counts plates: ข้าวมันไก่สองจานkâao-man-gài sǎwng jaan is two plates of chicken rice.

    • ข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gàiหนึ่ง nùengจาน jaanครับ kráp

      One chicken rice, please.

      Men ข้าวมันไก่หนึ่งจานครับ Women ข้าวมันไก่หนึ่งจานค่ะ

  • ป้า bpâa

    auntie (an older woman; also 'you' or 'I') noun

    Call a woman about your parents' age ป้าbpâa instead of 'you'; she'll call herself ป้าbpâa too.

    • ป้า bpâaสบายดี sà-baai diiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      How are you, Auntie?

      Men ป้าสบายดีไหมครับ Women ป้าสบายดีไหมคะ

    • ป้า bpâaข้าวมันไก่ kâao-man-gàiหนึ่ง nùengจาน jaanครับ kráp

      Auntie, one chicken rice, please.

      Men ป้า ข้าวมันไก่หนึ่งจานครับ Women ป้า ข้าวมันไก่หนึ่งจานค่ะ

  • พี่ pîi

    older brother or sister; a friendly way to address someone a bit older noun

    Use พี่pîi for anyone a few years older than you: a waiter, a driver, a vendor. It's friendly and polite at once.

    • พี่ pîiชื่อ chûueอะไร à-raiครับ kráp

      What's your name?

      Men พี่ชื่ออะไรครับ Women พี่ชื่ออะไรคะ

    • พี่ pîiอันนี้ an níiเท่าไหร่ tâo-ràiครับ kráp

      Excuse me, how much is this one?

      Men พี่ อันนี้เท่าไหร่ครับ Women พี่ อันนี้เท่าไหร่คะ
