What the song is about

ไหล่เธอlài toe, “You've Got Ma Back (Your Shoulder)”, is a T-pop song by Fourth x Ford x Satang x Winny (2022). The opening song of My School President (2022), the GMMTV series about a high-school band that dreams of winning a music contest, sung by four of its young actors. A cheerful thank-you to the friend who is always there: rain or shine, you've got a shoulder for me. Its lines teach afraid of, disappointed, to dare, left and right, always, not lonely at all, how would you know?, to take a risk and thank you for.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. กลัว gluaจะ jàผิดหวัง pìt-wǎngอย่าง yàangใครเขา krai kǎoไม่ mâiกล้า glâaจะ jàลอง lawngเดิน doenออก àwkไป bpai

Afraid I'll be let down like everyone else, I don't dare to take a step out.

กลัวglua + จะjà + verb = to be afraid you'll…: กลัวจะผิดหวังglua jà pìt-wǎng = afraid of being let down. ผิดหวังpìt-wǎng = disappointed, literally "hope gone wrong" (ผิดpìt = wrong, หวังwǎng = to hope). อย่างใครเขาyàang krai kǎo = like everybody else. ไม่กล้าmâi glâa + verb = not to dare to: ไม่กล้าถามmâi glâa tǎam = I don't dare to ask. ลองlawng = to try; เดินออกไปdoen àwk bpai = to walk out, to set off.
  2. จะ jàซ้าย sáaiหรือ rǔueขวา kwǎaไม่ mâiดี dii

Left or right, neither is any good.

ซ้ายsáai = left and ขวาkwǎa = right: the words you need in a taxi or on a motorbike taxi (เลี้ยวซ้ายlíaw sáai = turn left; เลี้ยวขวาlíaw kwǎa = turn right). จะjà X หรือrǔue Y = whether X or Y: whichever way I turn. ไม่ดีmâi dii = not good.
  3. แต่ dtàeเธอ toeมี miiไหล่ làiให้ hâiฉัน chǎnเสมอ sà-mǒe

But you always have a shoulder for me.

The title line. ไหล่lài = shoulder; มีไหล่ให้mii lài hâi + someone = to have a shoulder for them, to lean or cry on. ให้hâi + person = for: ซื้อให้แม่súue hâi mâe = buy it for Mom. เสมอsà-mǒe = always, at the end of the sentence. The four singers are guys, and men sing ฉันchǎn for "I" too (a tap says "female speaker"); in conversation a man says ผมpǒm.
  4. ไม่ mâiเหงา ngǎoเลย loeiเพราะ práwมี miiเธอ toeคน konนี้ níi

I'm not lonely at all, because I've got you.

ไม่mâi + adjective + เลยloei = not … at all: ไม่เหงาเลยmâi ngǎo loei = not lonely at all; ไม่เผ็ดเลยmâi pèt loei = not spicy at all. เหงาngǎo = lonely. เพราะpráw = because. เธอคนนี้toe kon níi, "you, this person", points at one person: you and no one else.
  5. ไม่ mâiได้ dâiลอง lawngใช้ cháiจะ jàรู้ rúuได้ dâiไง ngaiมัน manต้อง dtâwngเสี่ยง sìangจะ jàได้ dâiเข้าใจ kâo-jai

If you haven't tried it, how would you know? You've got to take the risk to understand.

The rap. ไม่ได้mâi dâi + verb = didn't, haven't: ไม่ได้ลองmâi dâi lawng = haven't tried. ลองlawng + verb = to try (doing): ลองใช้lawng chái = to try using it. จะรู้ได้ไงjà rúu dâi ngai = how would you know? ได้ไงdâi ngai, short for ได้ยังไงdâi yang-ngai, asks "how could…?" without expecting an answer. มันman = it, here a filler; ต้องdtâwng = have to; เสี่ยงsìang = to take a risk. จะได้jà dâi + verb = so that you can: จะได้เข้าใจjà dâi kâo-jai = so you'll understand.
  6. ขอบคุณ kàwp-kunเธอ toeที่ tîiรัก rákและ láeไม่ mâiทิ้ง tíngไป bpai

Thank you for loving me and never leaving.

The song's last line. ขอบคุณkàwp-kun + ที่tîi + verb = thank you for (doing): ขอบคุณที่มาkàwp-kun tîi maa = thanks for coming; ขอบคุณที่ช่วยkàwp-kun tîi chûay = thanks for helping. ทิ้งtíng = to throw away, to leave behind: ไม่ทิ้งไปmâi tíng bpai = not to walk out on someone. และláe = and, a bookish word: between two nouns speech prefers กับgàp, and between two verbs it usually just leaves "and" out.

The hook is English, "you've got ma back", slang for "you've got my back": I can count on you. The Thai title says the same with a body part: ไหล่lài, a shoulder, the one you ซบsóp, rest your head on, when things go wrong. The cast also sang covers in the series, among them Tilly Birds' Just Being Friendly, which ended episode 6.
