Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. ทะเลาะ tá-láwกัน ganบางครั้ง baang-krángแต่ dtàeมัน manก็ gâwดี diiเธอ toeว่า wâaไหม mǎi

We fought sometimes, but it was good, don't you think?

ทะเลาะกันtá-láw gan = to argue, to have a fight (with each other). บางครั้งbaang-kráng = sometimes (บางbaang = some, ครั้งkráng = time). มันก็ดีman gâw dii = it was good all the same (มันman = it). เธอว่าไหมtoe wâa mǎi = don't you think? Here ว่าwâa means to say, to think so: อร่อยดีเธอว่าไหมà-ràwy dii toe wâa mǎi = it's good, don't you think?
  2. เรา raoจะ jàยัง yangรัก rákกัน ganหรือเปล่า rǔue bplàao

Would we still love each other?

The line before wonders what would have happened if he had done things differently. จะยังjà yang + verb = would still (ยังyang = still). รักกันrák gan = to love each other. หรือเปล่าrǔue bplàao at the end = … or not?, a question that checks: เธอเหนื่อยหรือเปล่าtoe nùeay rǔue bplàao = are you tired?
  3. รักแรก rák-râekมัน manลืม luuemยาก yâak

First love is hard to forget.

The title line. รักแรกrák-râek = first love (แรกrâek = first). มันman = it, a filler that points back at 'first love'. Verb + ยากyâak = hard to …, verb + ง่ายngâai = easy to …: ลืมยากluuem yâak = hard to forget, หายากhǎa yâak = hard to find, จำง่ายjam ngâai = easy to remember.
  4. เธอ toeสบายดี sà-baai diiไหม mǎiเป็น bpenคำถาม kam-tǎamที่ tîiยังคง yang-kongวน wonอยู่ yùuซ้ำๆ sám-sám

'Are you well?' is a question that keeps going round and round in my head.

The chorus. เธอสบายดีไหมtoe sà-baai dii mǎi = are you well?, the first question of every Thai course, and of every reunion. เป็นคำถามที่bpen kam-tǎam tîi… = it's a question that… (คำถามkam-tǎam = question). ยังคงyang-kong = still. วนwon = to go round in circles, and verb + อยู่yùu = keeps …-ing: วนอยู่won yùu = keeps going round. ซ้ำๆsám-sám = over and over (ซ้ำsám = to repeat).
  5. คิดถึง kít-tǔengกัน ganบ้าง bâangไหม mǎi

Do you miss me at all?

คิดถึงkít-tǔeng = to miss someone. คิดถึงกันkít-tǔeng gan, literally 'to miss each other', is how Thais ask 'do you miss me?' without putting 'me' in the spotlight. บ้างbâang in a question = at all, even a little: บ้างไหมbâang mǎi = … at all? The lines around it are the questions of a real reunion, like how's your life?
  6. อยาก yàakให้ hâiเธอ toeยิ้ม yímได้ dâiเหมือน mǔeanเก่า gào

I want you to be able to smile like you used to.

อยากให้yàak hâi + person + verb = to want someone to: อยากให้เธอมาyàak hâi toe maa = I want you to come. Verb + ได้dâi = can: ยิ้มได้yím dâi = to be able to smile. เหมือนเก่าmǔean gào = like before, as it used to be (เก่าgào = old, former): กลับมาเหมือนเก่าglàp maa mǔean gào = back to how it was.
  7. ถ้า tâaมี miiโอกาส oo-gàatได้ dâiรัก rákเธอ toeใหม่ mài

If I had the chance to love you again…

ถ้ามีโอกาสtâa mii oo-gàat = if I get the chance (โอกาสoo-gàat = chance, opportunity): ถ้ามีโอกาสจะไปtâa mii oo-gàat jà bpai = I'll go if I get the chance. ได้dâi + verb = to get to. ใหม่mài = new, and after a verb, again: รักเธอใหม่rák toe mài = to love you all over again, ลองใหม่lawng mài = try again. The next line says what he would do: hold you and never let you go.

Grammar in this song

Hard to, easy to: verb + ยากyâak / ง่ายngâai. Thai puts the adjective after the verb: ลืมยากluuem yâak (hard to forget), หายากhǎa yâak (hard to find), จำง่ายjam ngâai (easy to remember), อ่านยากàan yâak (hard to read).

Asking softly. Thai questions get gentler with small words: บ้างbâang (at all, a little), เธอว่าไหมtoe wâa mǎi (don't you think?), หรือเปล่าrǔue bplàao (… or not?): คิดถึงกันบ้างไหมkít-tǔeng gan bâang mǎi (do you miss me at all?), ว่างหรือเปล่าwâang rǔue bplàao (are you free?).

If I get the chance: ถ้ามีโอกาสtâa mii oo-gàat … ถ้ามีโอกาสจะไปเชียงใหม่tâa mii oo-gàat jà bpai chiang-mài (if I get the chance, I'll go to Chiang Mai).

The culture behind it

My Precious (รักแรกโคตรลืมยากrák-râek kôot luuem yâak, 2023) was GMMTV's first feature film, made with the studio Nar-ra-tor and directed by Naphat Chitveerapat with Kanittha Kwunyoo. It is a Thai remake of the Taiwanese hit You Are the Apple of My Eye (2011): seven friends in 1999, the first love one of them never quite won, shot mostly in Sukhothai. Nanon Korapat (his Just Friend? is here too) plays Tong and Film Rachanun plays Lin. The film opened on 27 April 2023, and word of mouth and the success of its songs kept it in cinemas for 48 days.

"รักแรกrák-râek" (First Love) is its theme, with words and music by Achariya Dulyapaiboon, who also wrote NuNew's True Love, and sung by NONT TANONT (Tanont Chumroen), from Phuket, who won the first season of The Voice Thailand in 2012; he also sings on BOWKYLION's Sometimes. It reached number four on Spotify's weekly chart for Thailand (kworb) and won the Bangkok Critics Assembly's award for best film song in 2024. The film's Thai title is cheekier than the song's: โคตรkôot is rough slang for 'extremely', so it reads 'first love is damn hard to forget'.
