Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. ไม่เป็นไร mâi bpen raiฉัน chǎnก็ gâwแค่ kâeต้อง dtâwngเข้าใจ kâo-jai

It's okay, I just have to understand.

ไม่เป็นไรmâi bpen rai = it's okay, never mind, no problem: the phrase Thais use all day long, here to swallow the hurt. ก็แค่gâw kâe + verb = just, simply: ก็แค่ต้องเข้าใจgâw kâe dtâwng kâo-jai = I just have to understand. ต้องdtâwng = must, have to; เข้าใจkâo-jai = to understand. Men sing ฉันchǎn for "I" too (a tap says "female speaker"); in conversation a man says ผมpǒm.
  2. แค่ kâeได้ dâiจำ jamความรู้สึก kwaam-rúu-sùekนี้ níiเอาไว้ ao wái

Just getting to keep this feeling in my memory.

แค่kâe = just, only, and ได้dâi before a verb = to get to (do it): แค่ได้จำkâe dâi jam = just getting to remember. ความรู้สึกkwaam-rúu-sùek = a feeling: รู้สึกrúu-sùek (to feel) with ความkwaam in front, which turns a verb into a noun. Verb + เอาไว้ao wái = and keep it: จำเอาไว้jam ao wái = remember it, keep it in mind; เก็บเอาไว้gèp ao wái = keep it for later.
  3. ภาพ pâapสุดท้าย sùt-táaiที่ tîiฉัน chǎnจะ jàจำ jamคือ kuueภาพ pâapที่ tîiเรา raoรัก rákกัน gan

The last picture I'll remember is the picture of us in love.

The title line. ภาพpâap = a picture, an image, also one in your mind; สุดท้ายsùt-táai = last, final: ภาพสุดท้ายpâap sùt-táai = the last picture. Noun + ที่tîi + clause = the … that: ภาพที่เรารักกันpâap tîi rao rák gan = the picture in which we love each other. คือkuue = is, in a definition: X คือkuue Y. Verb + กันgan = each other: รักกันrák gan = love each other.
  4. คำ kamว่า wâaรัก rákคง kongไม่ mâiหาย hǎaiไป bpaiตาม dtaamเวลา wee-laa

The word love surely won't fade away with time.

คำว่ารักkam wâa rák, "the word love", is how love songs often say love itself. คงkong = probably, surely: คงไม่kong mâi + verb = (I'm sure it) won't… หายไปhǎai bpai = to disappear, to fade away: หายhǎai = to be gone, and ไปbpai after it = away. ตามเวลาdtaam wee-laa = with time, as time goes by (ตามdtaam = following, along with).

Words you'll learn

  • เข้าใจ kâo-jai

    to understand

  • ต้อง dtâwng

    must, have to, need to

It goes before the verb; you already know it from ต้องไปแล้วdtâwng bpai láew (I have to go) and ไม่ต้องmâi dtâwng (no need).

  • ความรู้สึก kwaam-rúu-sùek

    feeling, feelings

  • สุดท้าย sùt-táai

    in the end, finally; last

At the start of a sentence it means in the end. After a noun it means last: วันสุดท้ายwan sùt-táai (the last day).

  • ภาพ pâap

    picture, image (more formal)

  • เวลา wee-laa

    time

ใช้เวลาchái wee-laa (use time) means 'to take (time)': ใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงchái wee-laa sǎwng chûa-moong it takes two hours.

  • หาย hǎai

to get better, to recover; to be lost, to disappear

When an illness หายhǎai, it disappears; the same word is used for a lost passport or a missing bag.

Grammar in this song

Just: ก็แค่gâw kâe + verb. แค่kâe (only, just) makes something small, and ก็gâw softens it: ก็แค่ต้องเข้าใจgâw kâe dtâwng kâo-jai = I just have to understand; ก็แค่ถามgâw kâe tǎam = I was just asking. With ได้dâi it means "just getting to": แค่ได้เห็นหน้าkâe dâi hěn nâa = just getting to see your face.

The … that: noun + ที่tîi + clause. ภาพสุดท้ายที่ฉันจะจำpâap sùt-táai tîi chǎn jà jam = the last picture (that) I'll remember. The same pattern makes everyday descriptions: ร้านที่เราชอบráan tîi rao châwp = the shop (that) we like; คนที่ฉันรักkon tîi chǎn rák = the person (that) I love.

คงkong = probably, surely. It guesses, gently: คงไม่มาkong mâi maa = he probably isn't coming. In a love song it becomes a quiet promise: คงไม่หายไปkong mâi hǎai bpai = surely won't fade away.

The culture behind it

Last Twilight (ภาพนายไม่เคยลืมpâap naai mâi koei luuem, "your picture, never forgotten") is a 2023 GMMTV series directed by Aof Noppharnach. Day (Sea Tawinan) is a badminton player losing his sight to an eye infection; Mhok (Jimmy Jitaraphol), a technical-college student deep in debt, takes the well-paid job of looking after him, and is the only applicant who doesn't pity him. When Day learns that he has about 180 days of sight left, the two face the dark together. It ran in 12 episodes on GMM 25 from 10 November 2023 to 26 January 2024.

The video of "ภาพสุดท้ายpâap sùt-táai" came out in January 2024, while the series was still on air. The words and melody are by Achariya Dulyapaiboon, who also wrote Bright's Kan Goo and NuNew's True Love. The singer, William (Jakrapatr Kaewpanpong, born 2005), is the main vocalist of LYKN, a boy band formed through GMMTV's talent show Project Alpha (2022). The song suits the story: when your eyes are going, the last picture you see of someone is the one you keep.
