  • ผัด pàt

    to stir-fry; stir-fried verb

    ข้าวผัดkâao pàt is fried rice, and ผัดไทยpàt tai is pad thai: literally 'Thai stir-fry'.

    • เอา aoข้าว kâaoผัด pàtไก่ gàiครับ kráp

      I'll have chicken fried rice.

      Men เอาข้าวผัดไก่ครับ Women เอาข้าวผัดไก่ค่ะ

    • ชอบ châwpผัด pàtไทย taiไหม mǎi

      Do you like pad thai?

  • ทอด tâwt

    to deep-fry; fried verb

    ไก่ทอดgài tâwt is fried chicken and ไข่ทอดkài tâwt a fried egg, though the crispy one on top of your rice is usually called ไข่ดาวkài-daao ('star egg').

    • ไก่ gàiทอด tâwtอร่อย à-ràwyมาก mâak

      The fried chicken is really good.

    • ขอ kǎwไข่ kàiทอด tâwtหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

      A fried egg, please.

  • ต้ม dtôm

    to boil; boiled; a clear soup verb

    Many soups are named after it, like the famous hot and sour ต้มยำdtôm-yam.

    • เอา aoไข่ kàiต้ม dtômหรือ rǔueไข่ kàiทอด tâwt

      Do you want a boiled egg or a fried egg?

    • ไข่ kàiต้ม dtômสอง sǎwngลูก lûukครับ kráp

      Two boiled eggs, please.

      Men ไข่ต้มสองลูกครับ Women ไข่ต้มสองลูกค่ะ

  • เปรี้ยว bprîaw

    sour adjective

    Lime, tamarind and green mango give Thai food its เปรี้ยวbprîaw kick.

    • มะม่วง má-mûangสี sǐiเขียว kǐawเปรี้ยว bprîawมาก mâak

      Green mangoes are really sour.

    • เปรี้ยว bprîawไป bpaiหน่อย nàwy

      It's a bit too sour.

  • เค็ม kem

    salty adjective

    What usually makes Thai food salty is fish sauce, น้ำปลาnáam-bplaa, not salt.

    • เค็ม kemไป bpaiหน่อย nàwy

      It's a bit too salty.

    • เค็ม kemไหม mǎi

      Is it salty?

  • จืด jùuet

    bland, not salty enough adjective

    Too จืดjùuet? Season it yourself: noodle stalls put fish sauce, sugar, chilli flakes and chilli vinegar on every table.

    • จืด jùuetไป bpaiหน่อย nàwy

      It's a bit too bland.

    • ไม่ mâiชอบ châwpอาหาร aa-hǎanจืด jùuet

      I don't like bland food.

  • แนะนำ náe-nam

    to recommend; to introduce verb

    It also means 'to introduce': แนะนำตัวnáe-nam dtua is to introduce yourself.

    • แนะนำ náe-namอะไร à-raiดี diiครับ kráp

      What do you recommend?

      Men แนะนำอะไรดีครับ Women แนะนำอะไรดีคะ

    • แนะนำ náe-namข้าวซอย kâao-sawyไก่ gài

      I recommend the chicken khao soi.

  • สั่ง sàng

    to order (food, online) verb

    Ordering a delivery on LINE MAN or Grab is สั่งsàng too; สั่งอาหารsàng aa-hǎan is to order food.

    • สั่ง sàngอะไร à-raiดี dii

      What shall we order?

    • จะ jàสั่ง sàngข้าวซอย kâao-sawy

      I'm going to order khao soi.

  • โต๊ะ dtó

    table noun · classifier ตัว

    Restaurants count people, not tables: for a table for two, just say สองคนsǎwng kon.

    • มี miiโต๊ะ dtóว่าง wâangไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Do you have a free table?

      Men มีโต๊ะว่างไหมครับ Women มีโต๊ะว่างไหมคะ

    • นั่ง nângโต๊ะ dtóนี้ níiได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Can we sit at this table?

      Men นั่งโต๊ะนี้ได้ไหมครับ Women นั่งโต๊ะนี้ได้ไหมคะ

  • ยัง yang

    still; (not) yet adverb

    With ไม่mâi it means 'not yet' (ยังไม่อิ่มyang mâi ìm not full yet), with an adjective 'still' (ยังหิวyang hǐu still hungry), and on its own it's the answer 'not yet'.

    • ยัง yangหิว hǐu

      I'm still hungry.

    • ยัง yangไม่ mâiอิ่ม ìm

      I'm not full yet.

  • หรือยัง rǔue-yang

    …yet? (or not yet?) question word

    It goes at the end, like ไหมmǎi. Answer with the verb + แล้วláew (yes, already) or with ยังyang (not yet).

    • กิน ginข้าว kâaoหรือยัง rǔue-yang

      Have you eaten yet?

    • สั่ง sàngหรือยัง rǔue-yang

      Have you ordered yet?

  • เพิ่ง pôeng

    just (a moment ago), only just adverb

    It goes before the verb: เพิ่งมาถึงpôeng maa tǔeng (I've just arrived).

    • เพิ่ง pôengกิน ginข้าว kâao

      I've just eaten.

    • เพิ่ง pôengมา maaถึง tǔeng

      I've just arrived.
