- ชั่วโมง chûa-moong
hour noun
A length of time, not a time on the clock: หกชั่วโมงhòk chûa-moong is six hours, หกโมงhòk moong is six o'clock.
- ใช้ cháiเวลา wee-laaสอง sǎwngชั่วโมง chûa-moong
It takes two hours.
- นั่ง nângรถ rótสาม sǎamชั่วโมง chûa-moong
It's three hours by car.

- นาที naa-tii
minute noun
- เดิน doenไป bpaiห้า hâaนาที naa-tii
It's a five-minute walk.
- ใช้ cháiเวลา wee-laaยี่สิบ yîi-sìpนาที naa-tii
It takes twenty minutes.

- นาน naan
(for) a long time adjective
Only for time. A long way is ไกลglai (far).
- นาน naanไหม mǎi
Will it take long?
- ไม่ mâiนาน naan
Not long.

- ประมาณ bprà-maan
about, roughly adverb
Goes before a number. Thais use it all the time to keep times and prices relaxed.
- ประมาณ bprà-maanสิบ sìpนาที naa-tii
About ten minutes.
- ประมาณ bprà-maanห้า hâaร้อย ráwyบาท bàat
About five hundred baht.

- เร็ว rew
fast, quick; early adjective
เร็วหน่อยrew nàwy (a bit faster, please) hurries anyone up. It can also mean 'early'.
- รถไฟฟ้า rót-fai-fáaเร็ว rewมาก mâak
The skytrain is really fast.
- เร็ว rewไป bpai
Too fast!

- เครื่องบิน krûeang-bin
plane noun
To fly somewhere, you 'sit' a plane: นั่งเครื่องบินnâng krûeang-bin.
- จะ jàนั่ง nângเครื่องบิน krûeang-binไป bpaiภูเก็ต puu-gèt
I'm going to fly to Phuket.

long-distance bus, coach noun
The big air-conditioned buses between cities: often faster than the train, but you get a seat, not a bed.
- นั่ง nângรถทัวร์ rót-tuaไป bpaiเชียงใหม่ chiang-mài
I'm going to Chiang Mai by coach.

The coach is really cheap.

city bus noun
The name comes from English 'mail': the first buses carried the post too.

The bus is here.

Taking the bus is really cheap.

line, route (bus or train line) noun
Rising tone. Bus numbers and train lines both use it: รถเมล์สายแปดrót-mee sǎai bpàet is bus number 8.

Take the green line.

red songthaew (Chiang Mai's shared taxi) noun
Chiang Mai's red pickup trucks with two benches in the back. Wave one down, say where you're going and agree on the price before you get in.
- นั่ง nângรถแดง rót-daengไป bpaiนิมมาน nim-maan
Take a red songthaew to Nimman.
- รถแดง rót-daengไป bpaiนิมมาน nim-maanไหม mǎiครับ kráp
Does this songthaew go to Nimman?
