How long, how many: กี่ and ใช้เวลา

How it works
1 How many hours, minutes, days?
You already count things with กี่gìi + a counting word: ตั๋วกี่ใบdtǔa gìi bai (how many tickets?). Time words work the same way: กี่ชั่วโมงgìi chûa-moong how many hours, กี่นาทีgìi naa-tii how many minutes, กี่วันgìi wan how many days.
The answer swaps กี่gìi for a number: สามวันsǎam wan (three days). Not sure? Put ประมาณbprà-maan (about) in front: ประมาณสิบนาทีbprà-maan sìp naa-tii.

How many days will you stay in Chiang Mai?
- เดิน doenไป bpaiกี่ gìiนาที naa-tii
How many minutes is it on foot?
- ประมาณ bprà-maanสิบ sìpนาที naa-tii
About ten minutes.
2 What time?
กี่โมงgìi moong asks for a time on the clock: รถไฟออกกี่โมงrót-fai àwk gìi moong (What time does the train leave?), ถึงเชียงใหม่กี่โมงtǔeng chiang-mài gìi moong (What time does it get to Chiang Mai?).
Answer with number + โมงmoong, then เช้าcháao for the morning or เย็นyen (the evening of ตอนเย็นdtawn-yen) for late afternoon. Thai splits the clock into parts of the day, so stick to these hours for now: noon, early afternoon and night come in unit 14.

3 How long does it take?
ใช้เวลาchái wee-laa (literally 'use time') + a length of time says how long something takes: ใช้เวลาสิบสามชั่วโมงchái wee-laa sìp sǎam chûa-moong, it takes thirteen hours. To ask, add กี่ชั่วโมงgìi chûa-moong or นานไหมnaan mǎi.
จากjàak A ถึงtǔeng B frames the trip: จากกรุงเทพถึงเชียงใหม่jàak grung-têep tǔeng chiang-mài, from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. In a quick answer, Thais often skip ใช้เวลาchái wee-laa and just give the time: ประมาณสองชั่วโมงbprà-maan sǎwng chûa-moong.

It takes thirteen hours from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
Tips
- •กี่โมงgìi moong (what time?) and กี่ชั่วโมงgìi chûa-moong (how many hours?) differ by one syllable: listen for ชั่วchûa.
- •นานnaan is long in time. For a long way, use ไกลglai: เดินไปไกลไหมdoen bpai glai mǎi (Is it far to walk?).
- •Times and prices sound friendlier with ประมาณbprà-maan in front, and nobody expects Thai trains to arrive to the minute.
