  • รถไฟ rót-fai

    train noun

    Literally 'fire vehicle', from the days of steam. The skytrain, รถไฟฟ้าrót-fai-fáa, is the electric one.

    • ผม pǒmจะ jàนั่ง nângรถไฟ rót-faiไป bpaiเชียงใหม่ chiang-mài

      I'm going to take the train to Chiang Mai.

      Men ผมจะนั่งรถไฟไปเชียงใหม่ Women ฉันจะนั่งรถไฟไปเชียงใหม่

  • เหนือ nǔea

    north; the North noun

    Thais go 'up' north: ขึ้นเหนือkûen nǔea. Chiang Mai is the big city of the North.

    • เชียงใหม่ chiang-màiอยู่ yùuทาง taangเหนือ nǔea

      Chiang Mai is in the north.

    • พรุ่งนี้ prûng-níiจะ jàขึ้น kûenเหนือ nǔea

      Tomorrow I'm heading up north.

  • จอง jawng

    to book, to reserve verb

    • จอง jawngตั๋ว dtǔaแล้ว láew

      I've booked the ticket.

    • จอง jawngตั๋ว dtǔaรถไฟ rót-faiได้ dâiที่ไหน tîi-nǎiครับ kráp

      Where can I book train tickets?

  • เตียง dtiang

    bed; berth (on a sleeper train) noun

    On the night train the seats turn into beds: an upper berth is เตียงบนdtiang bon, a lower one เตียงล่างdtiang lâang.

    • ขอ kǎwเตียง dtiangบน bonครับ kráp

      An upper berth, please.

      Men ขอเตียงบนครับ Women ขอเตียงบนค่ะ

    • เตียง dtiangบน bonเล็ก lékนิดหน่อย nít-nàwy

      The upper berths are a bit small.

  • กระเป๋า grà-bpǎo

    bag; suitcase noun · classifier ใบ

    Any bag you carry: a handbag, a backpack, a suitcase. A plastic shopping bag is ถุงtǔng.

    • กระเป๋า grà-bpǎoใบ baiนี้ níiใหญ่ yàiมาก mâak

      This suitcase is really big.

    • กระเป๋า grà-bpǎoของ kǎwngใคร krai

      Whose bag is this?

  • ออก àwk

    to leave, to depart; to go out verb

    Low tone, and the final k is not released.

    • รถไฟ rót-faiออก àwkแล้ว láew

      The train has left.

    • ออก àwkกี่ gìiโมง moongครับ kráp

      What time does it leave?

      Men ออกกี่โมงครับ Women ออกกี่โมงคะ

  • ถึง tǔeng

    to arrive, to reach; to, until verb

    Rising tone. ถึงแล้วtǔeng láew is what everyone texts when they get somewhere: 'I'm here!'

    • ถึง tǔengแล้ว láew

      I'm here!

    • ถึง tǔengเชียงใหม่ chiang-màiกี่ gìiโมง moongครับ kráp

      What time do we get to Chiang Mai?

  • โมง moong

    o'clock noun

    Hours are number + โมงmoong, with เช้าcháao (morning) or เย็นyen (evening) after it: เจ็ดโมงเช้าjèt moong cháao 7 a.m., หกโมงเย็นhòk moong yen 6 p.m. The full Thai clock comes in unit 14.

    • ตอนนี้ dtawn-níiกี่ gìiโมง moong

      What time is it now?

    • รถไฟ rót-faiออก àwkหก hòkโมง moongเย็น yen

      The train leaves at 6 p.m.

  • เช้า cháao

    morning; early noun

    After a time it means a.m.: แปดโมงเช้าbpàet moong cháao. 'In the morning' on its own is ตอนเช้าdtawn-cháao.

    • รถไฟ rót-faiถึง tǔengเจ็ด jètโมง moongเช้า cháao

      The train arrives at 7 a.m.

    • พรุ่งนี้ prûng-níiเช้า cháaoว่าง wâangไหม mǎi

      Are you free tomorrow morning?

  • ตรง dtrong

    exactly, sharp; right at; straight adverb

    You know it from ตรงไปdtrong bpai (straight on) and ตรงนี้dtrong-níi (right here). After a time it means 'sharp', and ตรงเวลาdtrong wee-laa is 'on time'.

    • เจอ joeกัน ganแปด bpàetโมง moongตรง dtrong

      See you at eight sharp.

    • รถไฟ rót-faiออก àwkตรง dtrongเวลา wee-laaไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Does the train leave on time?

      Men รถไฟออกตรงเวลาไหมครับ Women รถไฟออกตรงเวลาไหมคะ

  • จาก jàak

    from preposition

    You know it from มาจากmaa jàak (to come from). จากjàak A ถึงtǔeng B is 'from A to B'.

    • ไกล glaiจาก jàakที่นี่ tîi-nîiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Is it far from here?

      Men ไกลจากที่นี่ไหมครับ Women ไกลจากที่นี่ไหมคะ

    • จาก jàakกรุงเทพ grung-têepถึง tǔengเชียงใหม่ chiang-màiไกล glaiมาก mâak

      It's a long way from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

  • วัน wan

    day noun

    You've met it in วันนี้wan-níi (today) and the days of the week. Count days with a number in front: สามวันsǎam wan (three days).

    • จะ jàไป bpaiกี่ gìiวัน wan

      How many days are you going for?

    • อยู่ yùuเชียงใหม่ chiang-màiสาม sǎamวัน wan

      I'm staying in Chiang Mai for three days.

  • เวลา wee-laa

    time noun

    ใช้เวลาchái wee-laa (use time) means 'to take (time)': ใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงchái wee-laa sǎwng chûa-moong it takes two hours.

    • ไม่ mâiมี miiเวลา wee-laa

      I don't have time.

    • มี miiเวลา wee-laaไหม mǎi

      Do you have time?
